SAFE HANDS NATASHA MAKES DOUBLE SWOOP

Having achieved back to back promotions Copsewood (Coventry) Ladies debut season in the Midlands Combination Women's Football League ended with what Manger Mick Conneely labelled a disappointing Sixth place finish despite becoming Midlands Combination League Cup finalists and finishing runners-up to Derby County Ladies. At the clubs recently held awards night aspiring Goalkeeper Natasha Smithers safely collected two honours, Firstly, collecting the Most Improved Player then making a double swoop to collect that honour all Players relish the " Players Player of The Season " now in her fourth season at the West Midlands Club goalkeeper Smithers has excelled in-between the sticks over the years. In her third season at the Club former Sky Blues player Leona McCook collected the " Managers Player Of the Year " accolade after making the transformation across the City of Coventry While the Clubs Golden Boot award this year went to hot-shot Nicola Foskett whose mantel piece at home continues to be littered with Football Awards.

There was also a special mention for last seasons' hot-shot Ria Baker now in her second spell at Copsewood Ladies, who for personal reasons missed much of last seasons' campaign after her team-mates rallied to present Ria and her Partner with a surprise Weekend Break and Club Sponsor Melonie Smith, who runs several businesses in the City was praised for her generous sponsorship of Copsewood Ladies, which has paved the way to the club's success over the past few seasons. As team-chief Conneely sets about leading Copsewood Ladies into their Tenth League campaign since taking the reins at the Allard Way Club, he knows his sides undoing could well be once again the small squad that exists at the rising Midlands Club. However, having built some solid foundations Conneely is expected to add several new additions to his small brigade as they make their preparations for a second Midlands Combination Ladies League campaign.Conneely one of the longest serving Managers on the Midlands Grass Roots Women's soccer scene knows that on their day his Copsewood Ladies side is more than capable of matching and beating any side, A disappointing Women's FA Cup run last term was another negative for a Copsewood Ladies side who under the direction of Coaches Ryan and Joe Conneely continues to develop.Ahead of this week's return to pre-season training high on Conneely shopping list is one West Midlands Striker with proven goal-scoring ability to boost his sides all around the Park fire-power but on the other hand, Copsewood Chief Conneely will want to put the call out for Players, who believe they have the flare and ability to make a mark at a Midlands Combination level to "Come On Down" and have a try out for the West Midlands Club in order to assemble a bigger squad but without any shadow of doubt over the last decade Conneely has seen many talented players from the Marconi-Copsewood ranks fade away for various reasons.

With the initial learning curve now over the true test of Copsewood's ability in the third tier of the Women's Football Pyramid will come this season when they commence their second league campaign in September. While over the past ten years Conneely has nurtured many Players none had departed from the Copsewood ranks to better themselves but the true test of any Manger is not only to guild His or Her Club to the best League Standing possible but to develop the best players which the more illustrious football clubs often swoop for.Time constraints on the part of Manager Mick Conneely and Injuries went someway to hamper the club's success but in itself Conneely knows his side's dip in form in the later part of last season played a major part in a disappointing second half of the table Midlands Combination finish despite a fantastic opening day victory over their City rivals courtesy of Nicola Foskets match winner.

However, as the new season beckons the reality is Copsewood face many teams with big and better resources but undoubtedly Conneely will not be under as much pressure as his Coventry counterparts across the City Paul Cuddy and Scott Riddell whose Coventry City Ladies team will kick off as favourites to lift the title, however. On paper the Midlands Combination League title race could be contested by a handful of clubs relegated newcomer's Rotherham United under the guidance of Paul Durrans who lead the Millers Ladies to Midlands Combination success will be looking forward to making a swift return, like Copsewood, Radcliffe Olympic will be looking forward to progressing in their second season while promoted newcomers Loughborough Foxes will want to prove there are not there just to make the numbers up, along-side the likes of West Bromwich Albion, Leicester City, Crewe Alexander, The New Saints and Shrewsbury Town and newcomers Stoke City the title race promises to be a competitive one this season.

HARRISON'S FOOTBALL COACHING SKILLS NETS AWARDS

Tipton Town Ladies’ Football Club manager Faye Harrison, fended off stiff competition when she won the Charter Standard Coach Of The Year Award this year. It was presented to her by Sky Sports Legend Chris Kamara at the Birmingham Grassroots show at the NEC. Faye was then put forward by the Birmingham FA for the Regional Awards which she also won.

Faye was also nominated for the Black Country Sport & Physical Activity’s Awards, held on October 9th at the Copthorne Hotel in Merry Hill, although Faye didn't win she was proud to have been counted amongst the high calibre of nominees. Local lad Steve Bull was on hand to present awards, along with Sky Sports presenter Don Goodman. The evening went a great way to begin rewarding the people behind the scenes who work so hard, so we can all play the sports we love.

If you would like to be a part of this award winning team, and you are aged over 16, then please contact Faye directly on 07834 762106 or email info@tiptontownladiesfc.co.uk

SCHOOS THE GIRL- LEADING THE LADS

A Top Flight Womens Premiership league footballer has taken on the challenging role of leading Boughton Athletic to glory in the macho world of Men's non league pyramid.

Heather Scheuber is better known for her staring the role as the captain of Birmingham City Ladies. However, the former England youth international is also the manager of Boughton Athletic and, having helped the small time club avoid relegation from the Chester & District League Second Division, Scheuber is determined to help the Cheshire club win promotion this time around.

The 21-year-old star Striker from Waverton took over the managerial reins at Boughton last year and is only the female manager in the otherwise unglamorous league, and she is thoroughly enjoying the roll, challenge and the responsibility that comes with the predominantly male orientated managers' role. Before taking over as team-chief 18 months ago, Heather was a keen spectator at the clubs Hoole Park headquarters “Quite a few of my friends played, so I went along to watch them, she revealed “I think it’s interesting because most of the team are older than me, but they listen to me and respect me because I play at a higher standard than them,” said Scheuber. “I train with them and take some of the tactics and drills I pick up at Birmingham and use them to improve Boughton. My lads listen to me and know when I tell them something it is worth putting into practice on the pitch.I get a bit of banter from the other teams, and they wonder whether I actually know what I am talking about, but they soon find out”

The former Christleton High School pupil has used her football contacts well to arrange pre-season clashes between Boughton and Birmingham City Ladies, who finished fifth in the Top-Flight FA Women’s Premier League last term. It is the second time the two teams have met in friendly encounters. “It was funny,” recalled Scheuber. “The lads took it really seriously but the girls treated it as a friendly. It was a great match” Boughton’s training fits around Scheuber’s commitments with Birmingham City Ladies and her day to day job as a data administrator. She manages Boughton on Saturdays before travelling to play for Birmingham City Ladies on Sundays. Nevertheless, she no longer turns out for the England national women's team, (which surely is there big loss! after falling out with International management team two years ago when they questioned her commitment “Women’s football has changed after the FA cut back our funding and some of the best players went to the professional league in the US,” said Scheuber.“I have responsibilities at Birmingham City Ladies and at Boughton Athletic and, with the money for international players so poor now, it is not worth the hassle of finding time for yet another important commitment. If more funding became available to make life easier I would consider it, as I feel I am missing out on a chunk of my career as a footballer. Even so, at the moment I have plenty to occupy myself with.”

However, this seasons' early start for Manageress Scheuber and her Boughton men's team has been an indifferent one with just one league win from six outings, which means it looks likely to be another long hard season ahead both on and off the park for football crazy Scheuber.
