NORTHANTS FA TO HOST ARSENAL LADIES v NOTTINGHAM FOREST CHARITY MATCH THIS FEBRUARY Northamptonshire Football Association and Corby Town are delighted to announce that FA Women’s Super League champions Arsenal Ladies will play Women’s Premier League side Nottingham Forest Ladies in a showcase charity match at Steel Park. In what is the first of its kind to be held in Northamptonshire, the two teams - who boast youth and senior international players - will face each other at the Steelmen's new stadium on Tuesday 21st February 2012 with a 7.45pm kick off.
The match will provide the Gunners Ladies with a pre-season warm-up prior to the start of the second season of the Women’s Super League; Forest on the other hand are coming to the end of their Premier League season. England reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup last year and many of the Arsenal team are expected to figure in Team GB at the Olympics and then in the 2013 European Championships in Sweden.
Northamptonshire has over 45 girls' teams and 24 adult female teams competing across various leagues, in addition to around 120 girls playing in mixed teams across the youth leagues. This will be the first match of its kind to be played at Steel Park and it will be officiated by three of the female referees who operate on the men’s Football League and it will be a designated Respect fixture. Kathryn Hall, Development Officer for Women and Girls football in Northamptonshire, said: “We are delighted to be able to host such a top level women’s fixture in our county and Corby Town will be great hosts. “A number of Northamptonshire-based players have progressed to compete in the Premier League and some have been fortunate to move to the USA on scholarships. As an example, Annabel Johnson, who played for both Northampton Town and Rushden and Diamonds, is now at Leicester City and training with England Under-19's having started out with Ise Lodge. “This match will provide players in the county with a great opportunity to see top level women’s football and aspire to reach those same levels.”
David Mallinger, Acting Chairman of Corby Town, added: “It is a real honour for the club that two high profile Ladies teams have agreed to play such a ground breaking fixture at Steel Park. “The game is growing in popularity and this will be a great opportunity to witness the high standard of women’s football in this country and we are looking forward to welcoming a number of supporters to our new stadium for the first time.
“I hope that the people of Northamptonshire will also take the opportunity to come and support the Ladies and witness how much women’s football has developed in recent years.” Proceeds from the match are being split between Kids Get Going, a national charity which gives disabled children and young people the opportunity of participating in sport, and the Northamptonshire Swain Benevolent Fund which raises money to support injured footballers in the county. Tickets for the game are priced at £5 for adults and £2.50 for children under-16 and OAPs. Single tickets are available to purchase in advance from Steel Park on matchdays and Northamptonshire FA offices in person during the week. Admission will also be available on the night of the game but fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance to guarantee entry. There are three discounted group deals available to purchase online: A family ticket of two adults and three children costs £15; a group ticket for two adults and 15 children is £40 and a group booking for 15 adults available for just £60. Tickets are available online via the foillowing website: http://eventspace.thefa.com/northamptonshirefa/participant/arrangement.aspx?id=45150

WHY COMMUNITY WORK IS TOP OF THE TABLE FOR THE GROWTH OF LINCOLN LADIES Away from her playing role Lincoln Ladies Megan Harris is Lincoln Ladies Community Manager "My job involves developing a community programme using football and Lincoln Ladies. Megan explained " We try to get into as many schools as we can to deliver coaching and educational sessions. Rather than do something like a literacy lesson, we'd do a sports press conference, using Lincoln Ladies as a catalyst for that. It's something a little different for the kids. We also run holiday camps at Christ's Hospital School and have our first-team players there, so it's a really good opportunity for the children to interact with the girls in the first team. We can use them as role models and encourage young people to be like them. We got into 30 schools in 2011, which was fantastic for the first year of the programme. It was literally a case of ringing around and seeing who wants to hold these sessions. They are free as we manage to tap in to a few grants so the schools don't have to pay anything at all. In the current climate, that's something they find quite attractive. We have people like Casey Stoney, who is the England captain, doing sessions. So for six, seven and eight-year-olds to be able to talk to someone like that is a really good experience for them. That demonstrates where we're at compared to the men's game. We're more interactive. The players can actually deliver sessions and get the young people involved. I'm not really hands-on with the community programme, I organise it behind the scenes, which means spending a lot of time on the phone in the office."
Megan's other club roles sees her focusing on the business side of soccer with Luke Negus-Hill, chief executive, "At the moment we at Lincoln Ladies working on our marketing strategy for the forthcoming season. We're trying to attract sponsors as well, and I'm actually working on a presentation at the moment. That involves going to a lot of league meetings, so I've got a lot going on at the moment" added Megan, who also undertakes the roll of Centre of Excellence Manger, which takes up a lot of her time as well As for matters on the pitch, the season is just a couple of months away for ever developing Lincoln, who have undertaken several preseason outings already under the watchfully eye of new manager Glen Harris "We've got cup matches in March, with the Super League starting in early April. After finishing fourth last season, we've really got to push on now" said Megan brought in a few new players, a couple of Australian girls Collette McCallum and Laura Alleway and striker Precious Hamilton from Doncaster Belles. They will all really strengthen the side. We're looking at finishing in the top two now, and we really want to do well in the FA Cup because we went out early last season" To learn more about Lincoln Ladies' community work, visit lincolnladiesfc.com/community.

CAP IN HAND COULD SEE ENGLAND TRIO REACH MILESTONE IN CYPRUS A Trio of England Women’s players could be in-line for their 100th cap in early March after being named in Hope Powell’s Cyprus Cup squad. England will come face to face with Finland on Tuesday 28 February, Switzerland on Thursday 1st March and France on Sunday 4th March, in the annual friendly tournament in Larnaca, matches, which could herald the arrive of 100 caps for midfielder Fara Williams, who currently has 98 caps and rear-guard duo Rachel Unitt and Casey Stoney, who has deputise England captain throughout their Euro 2013 qualifying campaign both hold 97 caps to the name. So the Cyrus Tournament could herald that special triple-figure landmark for three of England's household names as they look towards helping England progress.
“They all broke into the senior squad at pretty much the same time and it has been nice seeing them mature and grow as players,” said Powell, of the expectant trio. “If you look at Casey, she didn’t kick a ball in the 2005 Euros, but she worked really, really hard and she is now the captain. “I have to applaud all three, though,” she continued. “They’ve all got different qualities; they've all done exceptionally well to get this far, and they are all still in a position to have an impact on games. Getting to 100 caps is no mean feat in any sport, so credit to them for putting themselves in that position.”
While there is still no place in the squad for regular skipper Faye White, who continues on the road to recovery following knee surgery, The Cyprus Tournament heralds a return for Anita Asante who returns to the squad for the first time since the World Cup, and Doncaster Rovers Belles new signing Sue Smith, who ironically last featured for England in last season’s Cyprus Cup. However, there is no place for the injured Rachel Yankey. This year’s Cyprus Cup comprises of three groups of four teams with England drawn in Group A.
“The priority isn’t really a focus on exactly who we are playing, although all three of our group games will undoubtedly be tough, particularly France,” said Powell. “This tournament is more about giving me an opportunity to look at the players and see how they cope in a tournament environment.
“After a training camp at La Manga in January the competition for places is quite fierce now. We’ve got players coming back from injury, some other players are now injured which gives other players an opportunity to impress, so it’s a really good chance to assess players over a good period of time to see how they do, particularly with the Euro qualifiers coming up again. The attitude and work ethic in La Manga was very, very good and hopefully we can build on that in Cyprus.Everybody will play some part, all being well.” added Powell
Speaking on the demise of the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) league in America who this week announced it had suspended play for the 2012 season, due to a legal wrangle over the ownership of the South Florida franchise Magicjack. Three England internationals, Alex Scott, Anita Asante and Kelly Smith, who plied their trade in the States, but Powell, who expressed sympathy for the leagues current plight does not believe it will prove a major problem to her England build-up campaign, “It’s really disappointing that the league has experienced problems again, both for the League itself, the clubs and the players involved. But I’ve spoken to our girls that are based in America and told them not to panic. They’ve only just been told about the WPS situation and they need a bit of time to take it in. But they are all good players and clubs will want them. And the most important thing is that they want to play.”
After Cyprus, England will resume their Euro 2013 qualifying campaign in Croatia on Saturday 31st March.
“The priority is to qualify for the Euros and our next qualifier is approaching, so the Cyprus Cup will give us a great opportunity to prepare for that big game,” said Powell.
