SUCCESSFUL DEBUT SEASON FOR TELFORD GIRLS & LADIES FC Having been crowned Shropshire FA County League -Huddersfield Challenge Cup Final winners following a 5-0 victory over Bridgnorth Town Ladies last Friday night the 2nd May, Newcomers Telford Girls & Ladies go searching for more silverware in the coming weeks. Beth Hughes set Telford Girls & Ladies on their way to Challenge Cup success with the opening goal before four goals from Debbie Slater cemented the Clubs first Cup Final success following a comprehensive 5-0 victory. A good Shropshire County league campaign has seen manager Steve Reeves side beaten just twice in sixteen league outings, they currently sit three points clear of nearest challengers Whitchurch Alport, With The Top spot in the Shropshire County League carrying automatic promotion too the West Midlands Regional Ladies Football League and with an important league game looming against second placed rivals Whitchurch Alport on Sunday 11th May Telford will be searching for further success having already beaten their opponents this season, but whatever the result Telford will remain top by virtual of goal difference.More Silverware is on offer when the two sides go head to head seven days later on Sunday 18th May in the League Cup Final sponsored by www.printme.me.uk which kick off at 5pm at Market Drayton.Three Cup Final appearances and a top of the table league standing heralds a great season for Telford Girls & Ladies FC. We asked Senior Ladies Manager and Club Secretary Steve Reeves - How and why the club formed ? He Said " How we were formed, what a question (laugh out loud) - We started an under 10's team in 2006/07 season under a boys club, on account of my sister, she wanted to play football but not mixed with boys. We managed to attract 14 girls for that season and one of the under 10's had a sister who was 15 at the time, she wanted to play too. Therefore, I took her down to One Club, but she didn't like it, and I heard various rumours regarding other Clubs, so I didn't take her there.She then asked if I would start a team for her so that's how the Ladies team really started, we then decided to create TGLFC, as the boys club we were under didn't really support us. We wanted somewhere central for mixed abilities to come, we currently have Under 10's 12's along with a ladies side and are hoping to have an additional two team's next year with an Under 14's and a Reserve Ladies Team.Out of the 27 players, I have signed only Six players who use to play for the old Telford team. Furthermore, they only came after AFC Telford Folded.We are currently working on our new home ground which we hope will be ready for the new season" Shropshire County FA league leaders Telford Girls and Ladies FC have enjoyed a fantastic first season, On Friday night the club could clinch more silverware when they take on a higher gradient Midlands Combination opponents T.N.S (The New Saints) at Shrewsbury Town's New Stadium, In what is sure to be a big test and a bench mark for the senior sides on the pitch progress at the developing Shropshire County club.Having only started this season the club has recently been boosted by the news that it has been awarded a Football Foundation grant to further it's future development, Having been formed in 2007 by a group of hard working people dedicated to bringing female football to the Shropshire area both girls and ladies. The club caters for girls from 5 to 16 years old in its youth section and 16+ in their senior ladies team.The 2007 / 2008 season has been a successful first season, in-which the club entered two youth teams into the Shropshire Girls Youth League at under 10's and Under 12's level along with a ladies team who play into the Shropshire County FA Women's League which cater for players 16 years and above.Players in the Senior Ladies Team that wish to further their footballing careers will be able to do so by the club's association with Wolverhampton Wanderers Women's FC. 2008 see's the Telford Girls & Ladies FC holding it's first football tournament's across two weekends in July while the success of the senior ladies side has also been transferred to it's Junior Under 10's side who under the rein of team-chief Colleen Anson finished their league campaign with a 100 percent record having won all of their ten league games and theirs another chance for more success and Cup Glory for the Telford Girls juniors Under 10's side on May 24th when they play Wrekin Girls in the Charity Cup Final. CHAMPIONS CORBY COIN IT TO HELP DEAF INTERNATIONAL CLAIRE East Midlands Southern League Champions Corby Stewarts & Lloyds Ladies rounded off a fantastic season with a 4-0 victory over Northamptonshire FA County League First Division Champions and League Cup Winners Daventry Town Ladies. Carlie Norton fired Corby ahead inside the opening 45 minutes before a goal double in the second half from Joanne Ross along with a Georgina Sturgess strike on eighty minutes confirmed victory for Corby Stewarts & Lloyds Ladies. Before their final game of the season at Occupation Road, Corby S&L Ladies had great pleasure in making a cheque presentation to Deaf Footballer Claire Stancliffe. Northampton based Claire who plays her domestic football for Northants County league side Wellingborough Whitworths has been selected to represent the GB Deaf Ladies football team at next years Deaf Olympics in Taiwan and has recently been told that she has also been selected to represent England at this years World Cup in Greece.Claire, aged 19, has been instrumental this season in organizing and helping to bring the GB Deaf Ladies football team to the Northamptonshire area on two occasions this season, however one big burden on Claire's love of playing football with her deaf friends around the globe on an international stage are the big financial constraints on deaf players like Claire, who have to fund themselves in order play, Should there be any Organisations or Companies wishing to assist or sponsor Claire, in her fund raising efforts for these two fantastic forthcoming international football opportunities, you may contact her at diamondsr4ever_10@hotmail.com. THORPLANDS UNITED LADIES RECEIVE QUEENS AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE Despite a disastrous last season for Northamptonshire FA County league side Thorplands United the Club are looking forward to regrouping and building on their solid Community football foundations after the Club received the Queens Award for Voluntary Service 2008. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 has been graciously pleased to confirm Her Award too the Football Club in the following group in recognition of their impressive voluntary work in the community "Voluntary Group” East Midlands: Thorplands United Football Club beat off competition for providing football for all and other youth activities in the interests of social welfare and community cohesion." Groups have to be independently nominated for The Queen's Award, by two reputable referees, who are not involved in the running of the group. The award celebrates the anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen's Coronation. An initial local assessment of groups is made by the Lord-Lieutenant, or Deputy Lieutenant of the County. Lord Lieutenant's assessments are viewed by The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service Panel, who judges the application on set criteria, before sending a maxim of 25 local applications forward for short-listing. Award winners have to satisfy the under noted criteria: Meet a particular need Provide community-focused voluntary activities of a very high quality having generated a high level of goodwill and respect among those they service and the community as a whole Have evolved locally and are locally run, Have a proven track record of active involvement in the community, normally over a period of over three years or more The Local Selection Panel receives the nominations, this panel is made up of qualified people from local services, health, education, social services, youth work, local business, chaired by a Director in the Regional Government Office. This assessment produces short - listed nominations, which are then sent to The Queen's Jubilee Award Committee. This is chaired by the Permanent Under-Secretary of State for the Home Office, and the Terms of Reference require that the Committee compares the relative merits of the nominated groups across the UK, bearing in mind "that there is reasonable balance across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man as a whole, in terms of the quality and consistency of nominations, the types of groups rewarded and the locality". The final selection is chosen for recommendation to The Queen. Thorplands United Football Club was awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service 2008, by Her Majesty The Queen, following the rigorous selection procedure. The Club Chairman Gary Palmer expressed his delight at being nominated and on receiving this prestigious award. Gary wishes to place on record his appreciation and thanks, to all volunteers, players and committee members. "This has been a very successful year for the club; we won the 2008 Northampton Town Football Cup and 2008 Northampton and District Youth Alliance under 12's League. Running the club is really a team effort and everyone who has helped the club, and worked hard for us, shares the great honour we have received in being awarded The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service 2008. Thorplands United F.C. will be representing Northamptonshire as winners of the County Futsal Championship at the regional finals in Northampton, this weekend. We held our own Trophy Presentation Evening at Lings Forum on Friday 23rd May 08, which was a great success. To then win the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service 2008, is really a wonderful tribute to all our efforts. Club Secretary Pete Brewin and Club Fundraising Officer Jim O'Rourke are pleased to accept an invitation, with spouses, to attend The Queen's Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in July 08, in recognition of receiving this award, on behalf of the club and all the volunteers. Club Secretary Pete Brewin is delighted with the award, which he feels is a great honour and a well deserved recognition for all the hard work which has gone into building the club up from scratch to great success, in just over three years. Jim O'Rourke, Club Fundraiser, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Thorplands United Football Club and everyone involved with the club. We are one of only four groups in the East Midlands to win the Queen's Award 2008. Also, this year, we are one of only two volunteer-led amateur football clubs in the entire United Kingdom, to be honoured by The Queen. It gives us great pleasure to receive this award, which was made by being independently nominated and independently assessed. This award recognises the difficulties and the triumphs of the club's history, and celebrates the magnificent achievements of everyone who has made a voluntary contribution to our club. It is fantastic that others outside of our community have recognised the value of our voluntary work, and that they decided to nominate us for this marvellous award. To achieve The Queen's Award is probably a once in a lifetime achievement" It was very difficult for us local residents to start up an amateur football club in Thorplands, because we had no money, and at that time, we did not even have access to our local football pitches at Round Spinney. Those pitches are our only available green area, and they had been closed and bounded by the council on account of misuse by outsiders, environmental damage and unlawful parking. Gaining access to the pitches took time and negotiating skills. We have since established Round Spinney as our home ground, and it is within easy walking distance of Thorplands, safely linked by a footbridge across Talavera Way. We still have no changing rooms or toilets at our pitches at Round Spinney. Pitches belong to the Borough Council and have to be pre booked and paid for. We need toilets and changing rooms, so we have to hire club facilities elsewhere in town, especially when we are hosting a match with an "away team” that may have travelled from quite far away. This comes at an increased cost and greater logistical effort. Additionally The Club has storage facilities for a substantial amount of kit and equipment. The chief focus of our future effort is therefore to raise the funding to build a Sports and Community Centre at Round Spinney. Discussions are continuing. We are running the club to an excellent accredited standard and have made football, and all our youth activities, enjoyable and valuable for all the community.
