CARDIFF BANK ON LLOYDS DOUBLE
Sporting Club Albion 0 Cardiff City 2
FA Premier League Cup Group 7 Match Report From Patrick Higgins
Cardiff City got their Premier League Cup campaign off to a successful start with away 2-0 win against Sporting Club Albion, who were making their debut in the competition at their Halesowen home. Albion, having a fine season in the Northern Division, were undone by National League opponents who carved out a number of excellent chances with quick breaks from midfield. The hosts were always competitive in an enjoyable match but came up against a well drilled defence which has been very effective all season. The Bluebirds got an early breakthrough to cap a lively start. Ellie Smith got away on the left and sent in a cross which was half cleared after an awkward bounce at the near post. Beth Lloyd pounced on the loose ball to put Cardiff ahead on 7 minutes. Amie Lea had a goal ruled out for offside as Cardiff threatened again. The same player had a shot well held by Albion keeper Becky Thomas before the home side had mustered a chance.

Albion played their way back into the match with Natasha Baptiste's powerful runs and ability to hold the ball central to their play. The striker headed over the bar then sent a long-range effort into Rhian Nokes' arms. Emily Owen then had two good efforts on Cardiff's goal around the half hour as Albion had their best spell. A flowing move saw a drive flash wide from a tight angle before Owen produced an outstanding solo effort. Stealing the ball from a throw out wide on the right, she beat two defenders before hitting a 20 yard effort inches wide of the far post. Defensive uncertainty gave Cardiff a great chance to double their lead on 37 minutes. An under hit back pass saw Lloyd clear, but she placed a shot against the angle of post and bar from 15 yards. Thomas saved well at her near post from Nicola Cousins to keep the deficit at one on 47 minutes. However, she was powerless to stop Lloyd netting from 18 yards after a dangerous breakdown the middle had caused a mishit clearance straight to the Cardiff striker.

Albion needed a boost and substitute Ashleigh Neville provided it, going close from an Owen free-kick before racing through the Cardiff defence to shoot just over the bar. Albion pressed on to try to save a point with 20 minutes to go, Baptiste and Jamie Fowler had efforts on goal from long range. Cardiff were also finding chances as the game became stretched, Lloyd going close to a hat trick, Lea had a powerful free kick well held by Thomas on 78 minutes, and Cousins tried her luck from distance twice to no avail. One final scramble in the Cardiff area was mopped up by a resolute and determined back line which had protected Nokes very effectively all afternoon to earn a deserved win. With group rivals Aston Villa unable to get their game played against Coventry City, it is the Bluebirds, who top Group 7 after day one. Albion may have lost their debut match, but still have plenty to play for in a variety of competitions.

Sporting Club Albion - Becky Thomas, Laura McQulikin, Kelly Darby, Jamie Fowler, Amy Rippington, Alice Broadbent, Emily Owen, Sophie Richards, Natasha Baptiste, Robyn James, Kirstie Bavington Subs Siobhan Hodgetts, Ashleigh Neville, Abby Pope

Cardiff City - Rhian Nokes, Amie Lea, Laura Townsend, Terri Beddows, Danielle Broadhurst, Steph Williams, Nicola Cousins, Ellie Smith, Beth Lloyd, Kayleigh Green, Nia Jones Subs Annie Pritchard, Zoe Atkins

LEAGUE CUP REVIEW
Man City beat Preston 4-2, As the visitors twice hauled themselves back onto level terms. Abbie Mcmanus fired City ahead from a 26th-minute corner with Preston equalising through Gemma Watson, who hit home having followed up a parried free-kick after 43 minutes, City immediately hit back to restore their lead through Krystle Johnston, who latched onto a Lindsey Savage through-ball But Preston North End restored parity after Watson barged her way past the Manchester City rear-guard to level the contest after 58 minutes. Manchester City forged ahead through Johnston, who added her second goal of the game 6 minutes later, before Carly Bayley powerfully heeded home following Dannii Young's corner in the 89th minute. League Cup holders' Barnet Ladies began the defence of their title by beat Tottenham Hotspur Ladies 3-0. Danielle Murphy gave the Bees the lead midway through the first half before Cheryl Williams bagged a brace in the second half. Colchester United took a point from their score-draw with West Ham United, Meagen Doyle putting the Us back on level terms 12 minutes from the end this after Tracey Duxbury had given the Hammers the lead on 25 minutes. Portsmouth hammered Plymouth 7-0, Charley Wilson netting the first goal of her hat-trick after only 3 minutes Shelly Cox doubled Portsmouth's lead after only 8 minutes before goals from Jemma Tewkesbury and a Leeta Rutherford penalty gave the hosts a 4-0 lead at the break. Wilson added the fifth goal after 55 minutes, before converting a 78th-minute penalty and four minutes later Lucy Quinn completed the rout as Portsmouth bagged their seventh goal of the game.

A flurry of second-half goals enabled Reading to beat Keynsham Town. The visitors taking the lead through Suzanne Grant after 55 minutes, which was cancelled out by Nikki Watts, who shortly afterwards who then went on to complete her hat-trick by adding a late goal double. Charlton Athletic hit Brighton & Hove Albion for Six! eventually running out 6-2 winners. However, it was all square at the break with Elenor Bailes 8th-minute opener being cancelled out by Kim Stenning midway through the first-half. However, the Addicts turned on the style to hit five second-half goals inside the last 28 minutes, with a Gemma Bryan helping herself to a hat-trick and strikes from Jenny Newman and Fliss Gibbons, while Kirsty Barton grabbed a late second goal for The Seagirls. At Topps Park Nottingham Forest won the East Midlands Group 7 local derby clash at Northern Division leaders' Leicester City WFC 2-1. Issy Hayes gave The Foxes a first half-lead which was cancelled out by Andi Bell before the break, Natasha Meade should have put Forest further ahead in the 60th minute but with the goal at her mercy and only Nicola Van Deer Weerhof in the City Ladies goal to beat Meade's low drive, which lacked power and direction was safely scooped up by the Leicester goalkeeper who pulled off several smartly saves to keep Forest at bay in the second-half both sides had their chances with both goalkeeper being kept busy but it wasn't until the 90th minute that Forest cemented the victory with a last gasp Meade strike.

Leicester City Ladies remained a point ahead of their rivals Leafield Athletic as second and third met in the Midland Combination League at Aylestone Park Leicester. The game finished goalless in what turned out to be a tight encounter as you might have expected given the position of the clubs in the league. Leicester had the best of the first-half action, but the second half produced chances at both ends with, there being two crosses that flashed across the penalty box at each end. Aimee Cattel again pulled off the save of the game for Leicester. Leicester may have had most of the play, but the clear opportunities fell to the visitors. In the end, both teams had to settle for a point with Leicester having to go to Leafield next month. Linda Scott was player of the match for Leicester City Ladies. Next Sunday see's Leicester City Ladies biggest game for many years at Aylestone Park Leicester when National League Side Cardiff City are the visitors in the FA Cup Round 3. Kick Off at 2pm.

ENFIELD TOWN DROP MORE LEAGUE POINTS.
Enfield Town 0 Cambridge WFC 0
South East Combination By Michael Bunyan
Enfield Town Ladies dropped two points for the second week in a row as they played out a scoreless draw at home to Cambridge Women. Enfield Town manager John Abbott said, “it was a fair result on the day but we only have ourselves to blame as for some reason we seem to have gone a bit flat in our play and need to step it up to avoid the season fizzling out, we are missing a couple of very good front players and need others to step up to the mark and fill the gaps.” Enfield Town remains 3rd in the table. Both sides started the game with the defences on top, but Enfield had the first clear chance as Sara Sinclair chased down a back pass to Cambridge’s Verity Crook, who hit her clearance against Sinclair and was relieved to grab the ball as it bounced up to her. At the other end minutes later a corner by Natalie Richardson was played back to her and her second effort to get the ball across was sliced over the Enfield bar by their own Kelly Herrett. Sinclair volleyed a cross by Sheree Oliver well wide of the target. The ball was helped over the Enfield defence to Laura Baker, who stabbed the ball on but only to keeper Kelly Cooper. Claire Pavett setup Sinclair who shot weakly to Crook and then Crook beat Sinclair to a cross in the area as Enfield tried to up the pressure.

Beth Demery sent Holly Brandon to the corner and supported her before receiving a return pass and putting in a great-looking cross that Pavett stretched for but couldn’t get a firm enough touch to turn it home. Herrett did well to recover after Laura Brown had got away and put in a fine tackle to prevent a clear shot. A corner by Baker was headed towards the goal by Brown but Kelly Hughes was well positioned to clear off the line. Baker got in behind the home defence only for Claire Gooch to get back and block the cross with Sophie Thompson waiting in the middle. Demery passed to Oliver, who whipped in a cross that Pavett headed up into the air, and Crook caught the loose ball. Baker headed a dangerous looking cross over Enfield’s bar and then Oliver crossed too close to Crook as play moved from end to end. A Cambridge corner surprised Jade Beckett in the centre, and the ball bounced off her to Cooper, and the Beth Lovell had a header cleared off the goal-line from a Demery corner.

Enfield were quick out of the blocks in the second half, and Sinclair got behind the visitor’s defence but put her cross behind the goal. Gooch did well to head a cross out of Enfield’s area and was then fouled to relieve a bit of pressure. A quick throw in saw Sinclair shoot across goal. Thompson tried to escape the home defence but Herrett stuck with her and forced her to shoot early to Cooper. A Cambridge corner ended with Cooper making a smart save down to her right as Emma Jenkins got in a header. Kayleigh Burt stuck close to Sinclair in the area and stopped the Enfield player from turning and getting in a shot from close range. Oliver had two attempts at a cross with Crook stretching to take the ball with Sinclair behind her. A weak touch by an Enfield defender was chased by Baker but Cooper was alert to it and snuffed out the danger. A Pavett cross was cleared to Mabey, who helped the ball back in and Crook was forced to backpedal and take the ball on the line. Crook was in fine form and was well positioned a few times to take either shots or crosses by Enfield players. A Demery free kick was headed down by Oliver to Lovell, who got under the ball and ballooned it over the bar. Gooch threw the ball to Lovell, who passed to Sinclair and after an exchange of passes with Oliver Sinclair fired straight to Crook. Demery and Sinclair combined to set up a chance for Pavett but again, the shot was too close to Crook. Into added time Cambridge’s Shannon Garner burst into the Enfield area but Gooch timed her tackle to perfection and won the ball. Hughes slid Sinclair in for the final chance but as before the shot failed to trouble Crook and the game ended in stale mate. Enfield Town's player of the match was Beth Lovell for her usual all action non-stop 90 minutes.

West Midlands Premier Division By Chris Wells
Pegasus Ladies entertained their counterparts from Cannock Ladies in a top of the table clash in the West Midlands Women’s League Premier Division at Old School Lane, Hereford. The home team were in second place with the visitors one place behind. This was certainly a game of two halves if ever there was one. The home side got off to a great start scoring four goals through Charlotte Criddle, Emily Lewis and Emily Lovelock who babbged a goal double before Cannock reduced the score line to 4-1 athe break. Midway through the second half Cannock scored an unlikely goal. This revitalised the visitors who gained added impetus and soon afterwards forced home a third goal. The home side survived a penalty appeal, they were under pressure but were able to stem the tidee and hung on for three valuable points.

FIVE STAR SHOW FROM SHEFFIELD SINKS LINCOLN
Sheffield FC Ladies 5 Lincoln Ladies 0
WSL Pre-Season Friendly
Sheffield FC Ladies hosted women's Super League side, Lincoln Ladies at SUFC Academy on Tuesday Night, and It proved to be a momentous night for the FA Women’s Premier League newcomers, who ended the game as 5-3 winners, and a memorable night, in particular, for Sheffield’s goal scorers, Jodie Michalska and Carla Ward, who inflicted the damage on their former team this after Jess Clarke had gone close from long range for Lincoln. Sheffield took control racing into a 5-0 lead inside 20 minutes, leaving many spectators stunned. Kerry Parkin's darting run from midfield sent Michalska away to open the goal-scoring as Sheffield's top scorer this season lobbed the Lincoln keeper from the edge of the penalty area with 6 minutes on the clock. A minute later, the hosts doubled their lead through leading goal-scorer Michalska as Ward found Lisa Giampalma whose well flighted cross to the back post found Michalska, who outsmarted the Lincoln defence to head home. Sheffield Skipper, Carla Ward added a third goal from 18 yards out planting the ball low into the bottom corner of the net and, minutes later Ellie Gilliatt on the left and Michalska combined well to pick out Ward on the edge of the penalty box who smashed the ball home for Sheffield's fourth goal. Michalska capped a very good hat-trick on 19 minutes when she inched pasted the Lincoln defence to latch onto Ward's through ball and coolly lobbed her shot over the Lincoln goal-keeper from outside the box, and Sheffield took a 5-0 led. As expected, Lincoln soon hit back reducing the deficit when the ball was stabbed over the line following a corner after a melee in the penalty box making it 5-1, before Precious Hamilton neatly turned in the box and fired home a great shot into the bottom right corner to make it 5-2 at the break. New Signing Hamilton added a second goal in the second half with another crisp finished as the score finished 5-3 in favour of the FA Premier League newcomers.

Review
England under-17 striker Beth Mead helped Sunderland to a 2-0 home-win over Cardiff City as Mick Mulhern's side moved three points clear of inactive Leeds United at the top of the FA Women's Premier League.Mead, the leagues leading goal-getter netted her 17th goal of the campaign in 15 appearances in a Sunderland Shirt before team-mate Stephanie Bannon hit a late second goal. Second-placed Leeds United were not in action today, and Charlton Athletic stayed third in the table after sharing a point from a goal-less encounter with London rivals Barnet Ladies, despite both reams threatening to steal the points in the closing storages. Rock-bottom Watford kept alive their faint hopes of National Division survival following a 2-0 win against fellow relegation contender's Nottingham Forest.

Sunderland WFC 2 Cardiff City 0
It would take a brave man to bet against Sunderland clinching the FA Women's Premier League National Division Championship for a second consecutive year, Beth Mead gave the Black Cats a first-half lead as she latched onto Kelly McDougall's 32nd-minute threaded through ball to put the Black Cats ahead this after Cardiff City goalkeeper Rhian Nokes had blocked Mead's first shot, and she hit home the rebound Nokes pulled off a string of fine saves as the league leaders surged in search of their second goal, while at the other end, the Bluebirds were unable to break through a solid Sunderland rear-guard with Cardiff unable to muster a single notable goal-bound shot on target. The game was badly hampered by a strong gusty wind, Which helped and blew Bannon's after her long-range 80th minute free-kick into the roof of the Cardiff City net. The result leaves Cardiff third from bottom, but the Welsh side has games in hand on both Nottingham Forest and Watford, who along with them sit in the danger zone. The results move's Sunderland three points clear of Leeds United Ladies at the top of the table.

Charlton Athletic 0 Barnet Ladies 0
In a hard fought tightly contested game in which both sides staked their claim to take the spoils the points were shared despite both sides going close to scoring in the closing stages. Cheryl Williams saw a 20-yard shot palmed on to the cross-bar by Charlton's goalkeeper Megan Lynch while at the other end Gemma Bryan headed against the woodwork as her header rattled the crossbar. In the final minutes, Bryan was again unlucky this time being denied by Barnet keeper Cherie Rowland's brilliant save, while at the other end Charlton's Lynch did equally well to keep out a goal-bound effort from Renata Innis as both sides took a point from a game that somehow ended goal-less.

Watford Ladies 2 Nottingham Forest 0
Megan Wynne gave the Hornets a great start inside the opening 15 minutes as Watford launched their survival bid, Wynne heading home following a Jo Wilson cross in the 14th minute. Sarah Wiltshire doubled the hosts' advantage eight minutes before the break, forcing the ball home following a rebound after her initial penalty had been saved by Forest goalkeeper Claire Wallhead. Forest railed in the second-half but were unable to open their account with a goal and are now only ahead of their opponents on goal difference at the bottom of the Premier League table.

MISSED CHANCES COST COPSEWOOD LADIES
Copsewood Ladies 2 Loughborough Foxes 3
Midlands Combination By Ryan Conneely
Copsewood missed the chance to go Second in the league after slipping up 3-2 home defeat against Loughborough Foxes. With a strong wind, Copsewood decided to take a gamble and go with the wind in the first half and it looked like the gamble would pay off as Nicola Foskett got the home team off to a flyer by rounding the Foxes' keeper and placing the ball just inside the near post to take her tally to 22 for the season. Although Copsewood were struggling to play the football they wanted too, chances kept on coming (Rebecca Knights hitting the post) and if it wernt for a combination of poor finishing and great last ditch defending the game should have been well over at half time yet Loughborough Foxes would have been the happier of the teams going in only 1-0 down at the interval. The second half was a scrappy affair as the wind ruined any chance of either team playing good football but Copsewood still looked the more dangerous of the 2 teams. On 65 minutes Loughborough levelled the game as a fine move was finished by the forward who headed home from 3 yards out. The goal seemed to spur the away team on and it came as no surprise when they went 2-1 ahead as a 30 yard shot from the Foxes' midfielder got caught in the wind and flew over the helpless Natasha Smithers in goal. With 20 minutes remaining Copsewood finally began to up the tempo of their game and were unlucky not to make it 2-2 when Foskett produced a rocket of a shot which smashed off the crossbar and bounced safely to the Loughborough defender. 20 seconds after this Loughborough made it 3-1 when a wind assisted shot from 40 yards this time caught Smithers off guard. Athough the game looked like it was now over, the home side refused to give in and managed to make it an interessting end to the game when Abiyola Riley made it 15 for the season by slotting home from 5 yards out. Overall a disappointing day for Copsewood who once again created enough chances to win 2 games of football but eventually paid the price for not capitalising on their first half advantage.

LEICESTER CITY LADIES MOVE IN SECOND SPOT
Northampton Town 1 Leicester City Ladies 2
Midlands Combination By Ted Cooke
Leicester City Ladies sealed a vital win at struggling Northampton Town by two goals to one. On a terrible playing surface with a strong swirling wind the game was brought into disrepute with 3 red and 5 yellow cards. Consecrating on the football, Northampton Town battled from the start and took the lead from a penalty with half time approaching. Leicester levelled straight away when Erica Kilby found Kimbereley Walton to make one all at half time.
The second half was marked by the cards and incidents all over the park. From one of the Red Card incidents Erica Kilby looped the ball in for a fine goal. Aimee Cattel proved again she is the best keeper in the league with a superb save late on. Overall it was good to see Leicester’s desire to win a do well for the club. This win took Leicester to second and a play-off spot in the league the highest place for many years. Player of the game Emily Hanrahan, High praise as well for Erica Kilby and Molly Waldron.

Despite goals from Nicola Foskett and Abiyola Riley Copsewood Ladies suffered a 3-2 defeat at Allard Way against Loughborough Foxes.

Pegasus Ladies second team moved into the final of the league cup with a 2-1 away victory over Pershore ladies on Sunday. Becky Gummery making a welcome return after a broken collar bone scored both goals in the first half. Pershore tried hard in the second half and despite scoring direct from a corner were unable to find the equaliser. In fact it was the Hereford side who were denied further goals by some heroic goalkeeping and the woodwork. They now meet Droitwich in the final who beat Leominster.

GIRLS FOOTBALL NEWS
FIVE-STAR PORTSMOUTH SEAL VICTORY
Newhaven Girls U14's 3 Portsmouth FC Ladies U14's 5
East Sussex County League U14's Girls Section By Keith Braint
Portsmouth FC Ladies took on Newhaven Girls at Tideway School, East Sussex and made very hard work of the win. After a stuttering start (with the quite considerable wind blowing in their favour) the girls in blue allowed Newhaven two difficult chances that they failed to convert. Mia Cook then settled the Portsmouth Girls nervy opening by scoring another excellent goal from over 20 yards out to put her team ahead. Shortly after there was some good work from Mel Lawrence and Yssie Fricker that led to Fricker laying it off to Aleisha Brown, who took her first chance with power and accuracy. Going into the break two goals up, Portsmouth should have pressed home the advantage but the wind was creating some havoc at the back and within 10 minutes, Newhaven Girls had drawn level with 2 tap ins. Brown then missed a golden opportunity to put Portsmouth ahead again but skied her first-time shot from 5 yards out. Not worrying about that, she then scored shortly after with a superb sharp shot that went right in the corner of a very tight space in-between the keeper and the near post. 15 minutes to go and another lapse at the back saw the Newhaven Girls left winger cut into the box and have a speculative shot that was blocked but broke to a Newhaven Girls striker who was alone, and she buried it. Jade Samways and Fricker were not having the bottom team in the division matching them and their interplay down the right was superb, looking for a chance themselves or to set one of the strikers up, and it came eventually when Brown completed her first hat trick for the club with a very well timed run and finish. The home-sides threat then seemed but over and Hannah McColl rounded off the tally for Portsmouth tapping in after following in on a shot which the Newhaven keeper had failed to hold onto.

GUNNERS BOOK QUARTER FINAL PLACE

Arsenal 5 Rayo Vallecano 1
Arsenal win 6-2 on aggregate
Match Report Patrick Higgins
Arsenal cruised into the quarter finals of the UEFA Women's Champions League for the tenth time in eleven years with a convincing victory over Spanish Champions Rayo Vallecano at Boreham Wood. The Gunners were never really at their best and passed up a hatful of chances but killed off the tie with four goals in a 20-minute second half spell to book their place in next Thursday's quarter final draw.

After a quiet opening ten minutes, Arsenal burst into life as Kim Little slid a pass down the right for Ellen White who tried an ambitious 30-yard lob which sailed just wide. Gilly Flaherty then played a long ball down the left for Rachel Yankey to set up Katie Chapman, who shot wastefully wide on the turn. From the resulting goal kick, Jordan Nobbs headed the ball into the path of Little but Alicia did well to come off her line and save. The pressure eventually told on 15 minutes as another long ball over the top caught the Spaniards cold, this time White latching onto Ciara Grant's pass before setting up Jayne Ludlow with an easy tap in from ten yards. Arsenal continued to press and the only surprise was that they couldn't add another goal before half time. A powerful strike by Little was charged down by Cristina Pizarro, and a Nobbs shot was turned around the post by Alicia following good work by Little. White then went even closer as another long ball, this time from Steph Houghton, caused problems for Vallecano but, after rounding the keeper, her shot was cleared off the line by Pizarro.

There was a warning for Arsenal as Pizarro shot over at the other end from Natalia's pass, but they should have been two ahead on the stroke of half time as Little latched onto Houghton's long pass and rounded Alicia before chipping the ball for Nobbs to head wide of an empty net. Nobbs almost made amends in the first minute of the second half with a 25-yard lob which was just over but Arsenal's frustrations were eased eight minutes later. Yankey played a terrific reverse pass into the path of Ludlow on the right, her pass found White, who set up little to strike home from eight yards. There was another scare at the other end when Natalia burst into the area where her shot was cleared off the line by Houghton. Two minutes later though, Arsenal were three ahead when a long clearance by Emma Byrne was chased down by Yankey, who powered a first-time shot over Alicia and into the back of the net.

With Nobbs impressing when breaking from midfield and Chapman and Ludlow dominating matters just behind her, Arsenal sought further goals and the next was not too long in coming. Ludlow won the ball in the centre circle and found Yankey, who slid a through ball to Nobbs who fired confidently home for a goal her performance merited. Vallecano's reply was instant; a spectacular 30-yard strike from Natalia which gave Byrne no chance and drew applause from the home crowd. Two minutes later though and the four-goal margin was restored, Houghton skipping a tackle before feeding substitute Danielle Carter, who cut inside Sonia Ruiz Vesga before planting a left foot shot into the corner of the net. Yankey had been unlucky to see a second goal ruled out by a very late offside flag, and Ludlow was denied by a good fingertip save from Alicia after being set up by Nobbs and Little. Vallecano almost snatched a late consolation as both Jennifer Hermoso and Paloma Lazaro struck the bar in injury time but Arsenal had put the record straight following last year's struggles against Vallecano at the same stage, to round off a magnificent year for Laura Harvey's side.

Arsenal: Emma Byrne, Steph Houghton, Niamh Fahey, Jayne Ludlow, Gilly Flaherty, Ciara Grant, Katie Chapman, Jordan Nobbs (sub Jennifer Beattie 82 mins), Ellen White (sub Danielle Carter 68 mins), Kim Little, Rachel Yankey. Subs not used: Sophie Harris, Yvonne Tracy, Hayley Ladd, Angharad James, Melissa Lawley.

Rayo Vallecano: Alicia, Fumi Goto (sub Paloma Lazaro 59mins), Sonia Ruiz Vesga (sub Ana Catala 85 mins), Pilar Villalba (sub Esther Gamo 80 mins), Marta Gonzalez, Alexandra, Natalia, Saray Garcia, Cristina Pizarro, Ana Rubio, Jennifer Hermoso. Subs not used: Estefania Guisado, Patricia Martinez.
