Oxford City 0 Arsenal 7

Arsenal paid a visit to Court Place Farm on Thursday night with a team mainly composed of young talents from the academy and reserve teams and gave a demonstration of the depth of the clubs resources with a 7-0 win over South West Combination Oxford City. The star performer was Danielle Carter who has significant first team experience and gave a master class of pace, close control and finishing to notch four goals. The home team fought hard from start to finish to contain the Gunners forward line and also mounted a number of good moves themselves in front of a good crowd of over 300. It was Arsenal keeper Sarah Quantrill who had the first save to make, tipping over a 35 yard free-kick from Hannah Smye, but soon it was City's number one Hannah Cox who was giving her usual display of fine saves and clean handling in the face of Lauren Bruton and Lucy Gunton-Jones' attacks from the wing and Carter's direct running and shooting power. The first goal was a super solo run from Carter with a shot curled in from the edge of the area on 16 minutes, Carter's second goal on 28 minutes came she latched on to a through pass, rounded Cox and tapped home. Having missed an easy hat trick chance straight after, Carter had another close range power drive brilliantly turned away by Cox just before the break.

Arsenal rested Bruton at half time and gradually introduced their six substitutes who all played their past in a dominant second half. Carter duly completed her triple on 53 minutes and then Tricia Gould had a shot tipped on to the bar and Alexia Passingham tapped in the rebound on the hour. Lara ttacking down the right, hitting the bar with a long range strike. Another defender Hannah Short showed great technique to hit the net from the edge of the area following a corner for the fifth on 74 minutes. The pass of the night by Joanne Wilson freed Carter for her fourth and Fay got on the scoresheet a minute later with a precise finish for the seventh. Despite this rush of goals, the Oxford back four of Heidi Bates, Lauren Carnell, Cally Beaumont and Abi Smith prevented many other goal attempts with fine blocks and interceptions, backed up by hard work tracking back by all the rest of the team and there was no further damage before ref Sian Massey blew the final whistle The young Arsenal team had entertained the crowd with their skills and both sets of players deserved the prolonged applause at the end of the match.

PETERBORO AZURE STEAL VICTORY WITH LATE WINNER
Corby Stewarts & Lloyds 3 Peterborough Azure 4
Match Report Steve Iredale Azure Secretary
Peterborough Azure Ladies overcame the 'infamous' Ocupatation Road slope to record their first away victory at the Corby ground in three seasons. Playing down the slope and with the wind behind them in the first half ,Azure did most of the pressing and were two-nil up inside 30 minutes with goals from Julie Ikeda and Cara Clarke, However, Azure were to rue a missed penalty by Ellen Dainty after Jade Ovendale was taken out by a Corby player in the box. A three nill half-time deficit would have left to bigger a mountain for Corby to overcome in the second half.

Corby pressed from the start but the Azure defence held firm until a mix up between Azure centre half Louise Wright and goalkeeper Kat Rackham gifted Corby a life-line with Wright putting the ball over the advancing keeper. However, Azure pressed straight from the restart and Amy Rickards restored the visitors two goal advantage with a clinical finish from inside the penalty box, An end to end game saw Corby hit back responding in the best way with two goals in quick succession - one due to a defensive mistake and one from the penalty spot after a handball in the area. With the momentum and slope behind them then few people would have bet against Corby taking all three points but Azure refused to give in and with 5 minutes remaining, good interplay between the Arure strike force gave Jade Ovendale space in the box and from 12 yards out she placed the ball into the back of the net to clinch all three points for Peterborough Azure Ladies.

AFC TRINITY LADIES WIN NORTHANTS FA FEMALE FOOTBALL FESTIVAL

Sunday 22nd August saw the second Charter Standard Adult Female Festival organized by the Northamptonshire FA take place at Old Grammarians Sports Ground in Wellingborough. The Northamptonshire event has been running for several years now and provides a traditional warm up to the season in its 11 a side format. The tournament is only open to Charter Standard Adult clubs and is run with this ethos at the heart of it.

This year, four teams entered, including our newest Charter Standard adult club, Thorplands Ladies. Each team played each other for one half of 30 minutes, meaning the total playing time was equal to that of a full match. Reigning holders, AFC Trinity came back to defend their shield, and they were joined by Earls Barton Ladies and Kingsthorpe Ladies and Girls. Eileen Pacey, one of our local female referees, and Chair of our MDH Midshires Girls Football League took charge of one pitch while the other pitch was overseen by Peter Spink, who regularly referees in women’s football. The first round of games saw Earls Barton with only 10 players face the ever strong AFC Trinity. Earls Barton had a young side, and it was a tough start against Trinity but they did well withstanding heavy pressure. The Earls Barton keeper, Katie Newman, kept Trinity at bay for at least 15 minutes making a string of good saves before Trinity finally made a breakthrough in second half of the match. The game finished 4-0. The other first round game saw Kingsthorpe against Thorplands. Kingsthorpe had taken a fairly early lead in the game, and it was the only goal that separated the two sides. Though Kingsthorpe seemed to just have the edge, Thorplands pressed and had the odd attempt on goal. It was widely recognised that the Thorplands team had improved over the summer and impressed all throughout the tournament.

The second round of games saw Trinity face Thorplands, whose improvement was evident here as Thorpland's conceded only two goals and put up a brave performance. The game was more even, and Thorplands were unlucky not to get a goal from the game. The other encounter saw Earls Barton take on Kingsthorpe. Again, Kingsthorpe, playing with a few new players in the squad, had good spells of pressure and were denied by Katie in the Earls Barton goal. The game finished goalless with both teams earning a point from the game. The final round saw Kingsthorpe needing to beat Trinity to have any chance of winning the whole tournament. The game started fairly evenly with both sides having spells of possession but Trinity took advantage scoring through Bryna Holmes after a series of missed chances. Kingsthorpe had some good pressure and April Malin went close but the Trinity defence stood firm. Trinity held out to win by 4-0 in the end. The other game between Thorplands and Earls Barton saw a thrilling 2-2 draw with each side claiming a point from the game.

The results meant that Earls Barton with 10 came in third place after claiming two draws, and Thorplands finished fourth. Kingsthorpe were second with 4 points and Trinity claimed 9 out of 9 to retain their Charter Standard Shield. All teams were presented with Umbro vouchers and goodies, and Thorplands Ladies were presented with their Charter Standard Plaque and certificate. The runners up and winners each received medals before Trinity were presented with their Shield. Kathryn Hall, Women and Girls Development Officer for Northamptonshire FA, organised the tournament and said “This is the second year that I have run this tournament, and clubs seem to have really embraced the ethos of the day. It was a good day, with good football being played and a big thank you and well done to all the teams that took part.”

EMMA BYRNE LAUNCHES NEW IRISH NATIONAL STADIUM NO SMOKING POLICY

Republic Of Ireland goalkeeper, Emma Byrne, joined forces with Irish women's rugby captain, Fiona Coughlan, to celebrate "World No Smoking Day" by officially announcing that the New Aviva Stadium in Dublin will operate a ‘no smoking' policy for all sporting fixtures and concerts. Set to officially open later this year with a visit from Manchester United the New Stadium which replaces the old Lansdowne Road in Dublin is officially kicking home the health message to Give Up Smoking Worldwide the New Stadium in Dublin will be one of a growing number to have a complete blanket ban of Smoking not only at Football games but at all sporting and associated events.

Emma Byrne for many is arguably the best known of the Senior Irish Women's Football team managed by Noël King, Emma has represented her native Ireland at every age group and is currently Ireland’s Number One shot stopper with over 60 senior caps to her name. However, ask any footballer about their earliest childhood memories of the game and most of the time antics about kick-abouts in the park will follow, However, Emma Byrne is less sentimental, The Arsenal Ladies goalkeeper recalls a juvenile enrolment to the game that involved standing in goal and trying not to get hit in the face with the ball while her two elder brothers impersonated their favourite footballing heroes in the back garden of the Byrne family home in Leixlip, Co Kildare many years ago. Fortunately, it wasn’t long before Emma's big brothers tired of their games because, as sisters often do, Emma spoilt their antics,

Jokingly we are led to believe George Best played by Byrne's Brothers may have once upon a time have had a few shots saved by Emma in the Byrne Family back garden many years ago, but little sister Emma quickly surpassed her big brothers and shot up to nearly 6ft by the time she reached her teenage years, shortly afterwards she was selected for the Republic Of Ireland under-16s team. Byrne not only tenders' goal for the Irish national women's squad but for the team that has dominated the domestic FA Women’s Premier League ever since its formation in 1992. Arsenal Ladies have won the FA Women’s Premier League title seven times in the past eight seasons Or to put it in another context in all but one of the season's Byrne has been between the sticks for the North London club since her move from Ireland, after that the rest is history, Byrne has won virtually every accolade within the women's game while reaching the top of her game. As the authorities look towards sending the clear message to teenage girls that Smoking is not cool and is for losers then there can be no better role model in Womens in Football than super fit Emma, who admits to liking a sneaky glass of wine, although we cannot believe Emma doesn't like a nice pint of Guinness!!! now and again?

The smoking policy also covers half-time and/or intervals as fans will not be allowed to leave and return to the stadium at any time during the duration of any event to smoke. Mr. Bill Enright, Stadium Operations Manager, said that the policy went further than the current legislation on smoking that had come into effect in 2004 by including the fact that fans would not be in a position to go outside to smoke at any time during an event. "We very much want to promote public health here at Aviva Stadium. Ireland was one of the first countries in the world to introduce a workplace smoking ban in 2004 with tremendous success. In general terms a sporting fixture or concert lasts the same time as a film or a medium haul flight, and whilst we understand that certain smokers may find this a challenge we feel that it supports a safer, healthier and more enjoyable event for all." Aviva Stadium's smoking policy is just one of a number of initiatives taking place at the stadium with regard to supporting health promotion among spectators attending an event as well as staff members working at the New stadium.

Based on its initiatives Aviva Stadium has become a member of the European Healthy Stadia Programme. The European Healthy Stadia Programme is sponsored by the World Heart Federation and UEFA. Aine Brady, TD, Minister for Older People and Health Promotion, congratulated the Aviva Stadium on their involvement with the European Healthy Stadia Programme. She noted that the stadium is not only encouraging patrons to refrain from smoking, but is also actively communicating with both spectators and staff regarding the option to quit smoking and linking in with the National ‘Give Up Smoking' campaign. She went on to say that "the focus on prevention and promotion to quit smoking is critical. In Ireland 29% of people smoke and 7,000 people die from smoking related disease. Most significantly, from a health promotion perspective, smoking is the single most important preventable cause of illness and death. A worrying trend is the increase in smoking among young people, in particular young girls. The recent Health Behaviour in School Children survey found that 23% of boys aged 15-17 and 28% of girls aged 15-17 reported that they are current smokers. The most important way to stop the pandemic of smoking is to stop the influx of new smokers i.e. teenagers. It has been found that teenagers who engage in physical activity and sport are less likely to smoke. Therefore, the involvement and engagement of both the IRFU and FAI in promoting a smoke free environment is very powerful."

WOMENS FA CUP FINAL - DOWIE AT THE DOUBLE STEALS IT

Arsenal Ladies 2 Everton Ladies 3
(After Extra Time Score 2-2 on 90 mins)

Natasha Dowie's extra-time winner secured Everton Ladies their first FA Women’s Cup success as they beat Champions elect Arsenal Ladies 3-2 in Extra-Time in front of 17000 supporters at the City Ground in Nottingham.

Natasha Dowie’s 16th-minute strike had put Everton ahead, Dowie firing in from close-range after Arsenal goalkeeper Emma Byrne had parried Fara Williams’ 20-yard drive. Kim Little’s penalty leveller the contest. in the 43rd minute, midfielder Kim Little hitting her 42nd goal of the season from the penalty spot, this after right winger Gemma Davison had been uprooted by left back Rachel Unitt. Little's well driven spot-kick sailing in despite the best efforts of England's number one Rachel Brown, who got a hand to the ball. Everton grabbed the lead again before the interval in first half stoppage time when Faye White headed into her own net following Duggan's cross. Julie Fleeting sent the final into extra-time when she equalised early in the second half, Fleeting firing home from 10 yards out following a Yankey pass. With both sides tiring and penalties looming large there was little goalmouth action in extra-time but Five minutes into extra-time Everton should have regained the lead, right winger Jody Handley latching onto a Dowie free but from eight yards out her shot lacked power and direction and her feeble shot was easily saved by Byrne in the Arsenal goal with a penalty shoot-out beckoning Brooke Chaplen found Dowie in the area and the striker coolly converted chipping the ball over advancing Byrne in the Gunners goal to seal a historical victory just two minutes from time. For neutral fans both at the city Ground and watching across the UK on satellite Television then their could have been no better advertisement for Women's Football than this nail-biting contest.

Everton Ladies Brown; Easton, Westwood, Johnson, Unitt (Sub Whelan 63 mins); Scott, Williams; Hinnigan (Sub Chaplen 77 mins); Handley, Dowie, Duggan (Sub Evans 111 mins). Subs: Culvin, Hobbs,

Arsenal Ladies Byrne; Fahey, White, Flaherty, Yorston; Grant, Beattie; Little; Davison, Fleeting (Sub Carter 70 mins), Yankey. Subs: Tracy, Spencer, Lander, Bruton.

Reliving her moment of glory Dowie told TheFA.com, " "The ball broke through,I saw Emma Byrne coming out of her goal, and I thought I'd try and dink it over her, and as soon as I knew it was going in, it was just the best feeling, I've ever had jumped into the crowd, I don't even know if they were our fans but I knew it was going to be the last kick of the game, so I knew it was going to be an important goal. It's just the best feeling ever. I want it to last." Dowie's contribution was not merely confined to netting that late winner , as the 21-year-old star forward had broken the deadlock with the game's opening goal on 16 minutes and was later named the Player of the Match for her all-round command performance (for which she received high praise from Mo Marley her manager) but the star forward prefers to twist attention on to the whole club, after a decade of major improvement. "We had a really good feeling all week, said Dowie. "That's why I came to Everton because I believe we are the best team in the League. I just wanted the girls, the staff, everyone to prove that we could do it, and I think we did that today. "It didn't go all our way.[Arsenal were on top for most of the second half and maybe extra-time but we defended brilliantly, from front to back and we got the break and I'm just so happy that I could put the goal away and win us the game because we deserved it." Such is Dowie's desire for success that not only is she satisfied to have taken Arsenal's FA Women's Cup crown, she now wants to grapple the League title from their grasp too and in five days time Dowie and company will take to the Boreham Wood stage in what promises to be the match of the season as the big two in the FA Womens Premier League square up to one another again with the Championship Trophy at stage in what in Paper should be a mouth-watering contest "We won the League Cup [in 2008] but I came to this club because I believed we were good enough to be pushing Arsenal and to be the best team in women's football."We've had an up-and-down season this season, so to win The FA Cup, after losing to Leeds in the League Cup [Final] is a great feeling and we'll celebrate tonight, but then we are back on with the League. That's not over yet. We are looking forward to getting the double this year and win the remainder of our games. Hopefully, we can push Arsenal until the end."

Arsenal Ladies club captain Faye White stresses the team should still feel proud, despite a 3-2 extra-time defeat at the hands of Everton Ladies in the FA Women's Cup Final. The Gunners twice came-back from behind to force Monday's game into extra-time and had a number of clear-cut chances to win the tie. However, Natasha Dowie caught Arsenal on the break to net a 119th-minute winner for the Toffees and condemn Arsenal Ladies to their first ever Cup Final defeat having won all 10 of their previous appearances. The Gunners have been in transformation over the last 18 months having lost key figures Kelly Smith, Alex Scott and Katie Chapman to the Women's Professional Soccer League in the USA while under going two managerial changes during that time. However, the Gunners still remain on course to win the Women's Premier League in their final season before kicking off their super league campaign. Arsenal can collect the FA Premier League Championship accolade on Thursday evening if they beat Blackburn Rovers and Everton fail to take maximum at second-placed Leeds Carnegie. Arsenal performance in Monday's Final was also something to be proud of, according to White. "We can be proud because we have lost so many players over this season and last season," she said. "That was Everton at their strongest, and we still rattled them and gave a good game, so we can only be proud of it, but obviously disappointed. We aren't used to losing, and it is not a nice feeling. I am sure it will spur everyone on knowing that we controlled the game like that. A lot of youngsters have come in, and they have learnt what the winning feeling is and we have shown that we can do it consistently, week-in, week-out and that is the important thing."

The Super League will shine the spotlight even brighter on the women’s game, encourage younger women to take up the sport and help develop stars that will represent the ever-improving women’s national team.” The FA will meet with the new eight Super League clubs in April to consider next steps in the preparation process for the 2011 Super League Kick Off.

'The application and decision-making processes were not satisfactory. We've done so much for the women's game in recent years, yet we weren't even granted an interview to explain our submission.' said Arthur. with only 8 teams making the new league there was always going to be few happy punters and many unhappy losers. The Lincoln Ladies have been promotion candidates for the last Three years and lost to Arsenal in an FA Cup semi final cup tie which boasted a record crowd and while it may have been a dream for the club to be apart of the new super league structure few would have placed money of Lincoln beating off other Midlands Clubs but the reality is there dream has come true another surprise inclusion for some will be that of Bristol Academy however where does that leaves the losers like Barnet FC, Colchester United Ladies FC, Leeds Carnegie Ladies FC, Leicester City FC, Millwall Lionesses FC, Newcastle United Women's FC, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland Women’s FC they now face the prospects of having their best players tapped up by the big eight however with no promotion of relegation for two seasons today marks a chapter in their own clubs history when Monday 22nd March 2010 will be a day to remember or a day to best forget.
