WEEKEND FIXTURES

WPS DISBANDED
The Women's Professional Soccer league in the USA has folded after three seasons. The league canceled the 2012 season in January, at the time vowing to return in 2012. However, the remaining five owners announced in a statement Friday that all operations were suspended permanently. "We sincerely regret having to take this course of action," said T. Fitz Johnson, Atlanta Beat owner and chairman of the WPS. "We are proud of what WPS has accomplished, having attracted the highest quality players in the world to play in the best women's league, as well as the progress women's soccer has enjoyed over the past three years," Thomas Hofstetter, CEO and president of Sky Blue FC, said. WPS averted liquidation twice after the 2011 season. U.S. Soccer was reluctant to give the league Division I sanctioning after it dropped to five teams in November, but relented after the league pointed to a surge of interest in expansion prospects. In January, the league appeared to have settled a legal wrangle with Dan Borislow over the termination of his South Florida team, magicJack. But that deal fell apart, and the league announced in late January that it would suspend play in 2012. The legal tussle continued, with Borislow's motion for a temporary injunction and reinstatement of his team morphing into an attempt to enforce the January agreement he claimed to be binding. Each side filed accusatory motions, affidavits and discovery demands. On March 9, Judge Meenu Sasser granted half of Borislow's discovery requests. On Friday, WPS and Borislow announced all matters and claims giving rise to the lawsuit filed in Palm Beach County, Fla, have been settled by a mutual confidential agreement outside of court. Jennifer O'Sullivan, who was hired as CEO in September, and chief financial officer Kristina Hentschel were the last two WPS employees both departed their posts earlier this month.

Originally starting their management career at Coventry City Ladies, the duo had 3 strong seasons finishing second two years running in the Midland Combination - once to Leicester City Women! Birmingham City then called on their experience and had the second most successful season in the club's history in the Premier League. After two seasons, an opportunity arose that was too good to turn down with the management duo moving across the City to Aston Villa Ladies. In their first season, they won the Northern Premier League after winning 12 straight league games and added the County Cup to make it a double to remember. After a season out of the game due to the birth of Stuart's first child, The duo return to football management hoping to repeat their winning trait and take Leicester City Women into the National Premier League.

"We are looking forward to getting back on the touch line in a challenging league. There are probably 4 or 5 teams more than capable of winning this league, and we will be doing our best to be among them. There is a good vibe at Leicester and a professional attitude, backed by Leicester City Football Club. It's great to be back!" said incoming new team-chief Stuart Wilson one of the few managers to have accomplished winning the BCFA County Cup two seasons running while managing two separate teams a feat Wilson achieved with both Aston Villa and Birmingham City. BOREHAM WOOD FC AGREE NEW 3 YEAR ARSENAL DEAL
Boreham Wood Football Club can confirm that they will again be looking after the Women’s Super League Champions, Arsenal Ladies for the next three seasons. After completing negotiations and signing a contract extension on Saturday, BWFC Facilities Manager Matthew Hunter said, “Our relationship with Arsenal Football Club, their Secretary David Miles and the Arsenal Ladies General Manager Vic Akers is as strong as ever. We were thrilled to also be invited to the Arsenal Boardroom for Saturday’s Arsenal v Norwich City game, we enjoyed a great game, magnificent hospitality and then completed the formalities by signing the new deal straight after the game. Our Chairman takes our responsibility of looking after the Premier Ladies Team in the Country very seriously. I believe the stability of the long-standing relationship between the two clubs and the Arsenal Ladies dominance in the domestic game, is definitely helped by the fact that ‘Meadow Park’ is their spiritual home and has been for over a decade. In that time, we have seen title after title and cup after cup being won and of course, the ladies also won the Women’s Champions League here for the first time in their history, and it’s a excellent memory that we hope can be repeated in the next three years” he concluded.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY WITHDRAWS FROM WOMEN'S FOOTBALL
Northern Combination league high flyers' Sheffield Wednesday Women's FC has confirmed they will no longer be operating a Women's team next season. Full Club Statement reads

" It is with regret that I have to make the following statement in regard to the future of Sheffield Wednesday Women's Football Club. After conversations with representatives of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club and the secretary of the Northern Combination Football League a decision has been reached whereas of with immediate effect Sheffield Wednesday Women's Football Club will as of today, 2nd May 2012, no longer be operating a football club. This decision has been reached for numerous reasons. The main ones being that SWFC are withdrawing their support from our club, as well as the Sheffield Wednesday brand with immediate effect and will be concentrating on working with Sheffield Wednesday Ladies FC, who unlike SWWFC has a junior section as well as a senior team.

Although this team plays at a lower level than SWWFC, the main club are keen on building for the future. I have tried long and hard to work with certain people at the main club and although supported by some factions within the club the directive has come from the very top and people’s hands are tied. It is disappointing for me that as the outgoing Chairman that this is to be my last duty, but it was not for the want of trying to keep the club going. The league has been informed that we will be not entering a team next season and that due to circumstances, our final fixture will not be able to be fulfilled. The reason behind next season is purely financial due to the commitment that has to be made on funding a club at this level. Bills in excess of £10,000 this season has put a major strain on everyone who is involved in this club, and with little help from outside sponsors due to the economic climate has made this even harder to operate. Unfortunately, until women's football is recognised from the top downwards other clubs will be following SWWFC as the infrastructure and investment into women's football at this level is to say the least is embarrassing, and I have total empathy with major football clubs that do not have a lot to do with ladies' clubs using their badges, colours and names. I understand that there will be some unhappy players, staff and people that have or are associated with the club, and I am willing for any of these people to call me directly so as to explain the situation we were put in" said Club Chairman Jeff Maslin.

GOAL-LINE TECHNOLOGY ARRIVES
Goal-line technology is be used in a football match for the first time next mouth The Hampshire Senior Cup Final between Eastleigh FC and AFC Totton on 16 May at St Marys home of Southampton FC will test Hawk-Eye's camera-based system. Calls for goal-line technology have increased with dubious decisions marring a number of high profile games. Southampton's St Mary's Stadium is the venue for the non-league final in which Hawk-Eye will be used as Fifa continues its testing programme into the system's viability. Fifa President Sepp Blatter recently revealed that at least two goal-line technology systems have proven themselves fast and accurate. "There are now systems that combine precision, speed and are uncomplicated," said Blatter in December. In March, football's law-makers the International Football Association Board (IFAB) approved two companies - Hawk-Eye and GoalRef - to take part in the second phase of Goal Line Technology (GLT) testing. The IFAB has confirmed the second test phase will comprise four different elements. Between May 10 and the beginning of June, EMPA (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology) will rigorously assess the reliability and accuracy of each system, as well as how robust the technology is. The German-Danish-owned GoalRef will be tested in two separate matches likely to be in the Danish Superligaen or possibly when Denmark play Australia in a pre-Euro 2012 friendly on 2 June, at Copenhagen's Parken Stadion. During the test matches only Fifa's independent testing agency will have access to the system readings, and the system will not be available to the match officials. Refereeing decisions will therefore be unaffected. Approval for goal-line technology could arrive when IFAB reconvenes in Kiev on 2 July to analyse the second phase test results. Subject to one or both systems passing the tests the expectation is that the technology will become available to any league or competition wishing to utilise it.

I'LL BE BACK "SAYS SMITH"
Sue Smith has committed her future to Doncaster Rovers Belles after vowing to bounce back from her horrific injury nightmare sustained at Underhill. The 32-year-old star striker will miss the entire FA Women’s Super League season after rupturing her cruciate and medial knee ligaments on her Doncaster debut at Barnet a fortnight ago. However, the England forward has vowed to return from the injury nightmare - and she hopes to extend her stay at Belles beyond her yearly contract this season. Smith said: “One hundred percent I’ll be back from this. I’m a focused person and I just want to start my rehabilitation as soon as possible, If you’d have asked me a couple of days after it happened. I'm not sure I would have said the same thing because I was that upset, But now I just want to get the operation out of the way and get on the road to recovery, Obviously this season is a complete write off, but I’m trying to stay positive,” she added “The girls and the management here have been absolutely amazing in terms of looking after me. I’ve got to be a supporter this year and cheer them on, But looking further ahead I want to come back and play for Donny. I want to repay people for how nice they’ve been to me, and I want to get on the pitch and play for John Buckley.” Smiths Doncaster debut lasted just 28 minutes at Barnet, but the classy strikers' qualities stood out a mile. Smiths lost will be a major blow to not only her club but her Country along with the supporters of the FA WSL, Injury has also robbed Smith of a chance to be in contention to star at the London Olympics this summer, but she is now expected to be sidelined for at least the next six months. Smith is due to see a specialist within the next seven days who will decide whether the Merseysider will need one or two operations to repair her knee.

SUPER LEAGUE WARNING

A key football finance expert has forewarned organisers of the English Football Association’s New Women’s Super League that it may take over a decade for the league to be a commercial, vibrant and playing success story. In less than a year from now the new FA Women’s Super League will kick off with eight teams playing in the competition’s inaugural season. However, Professor Mr Simon Chadwick from Coventry University is unconvinced about the league’s short-term future prosperity on English Soil due to England’s cultural history, and says: “ I think we live in a largely male dominated society and in social terms, women have only started to break down the barriers in the last 30-40 years, so I wouldn’t say it is going to be a commercial or playing phenomenon overnight, it’s going to take decades to do it "

Following 16 bids from many existing women’s teams, only eight clubs were granted Super League Licences for the new championship after having to provide information on financial, business management, commercial and marketing, facilities, players and support staff. Arsenal Ladies, Birmingham City Ladies, Bristol Academy Women, Chelsea Ladies, Doncaster Rovers Belles, Everton Ladies, Lincoln Ladies and Liverpool Ladies will go head to head when the new league kicks off in March 2011. However, Chadwick pin points too the lack of social and structural organisation now in the women’s game as a major difficulty the new women's competition will face in its infancy.

He says: “I think in industrial terms men’s football has got first mover strategic advantage over the women’s game. The structures, culture, resources and organisation are there women’s football doesn’t have that. It has to set up its own structures and organisation, and it has to create an attractive commercial proposition. However, it’s not doing that in isolation, it’s doing it up against competition from the men’s game.“I would love to see it prosper because I dislike many of the macho aspects of the game as we know it. There’s a tough need for there to be a greater female contribution for the development of sport in this country, but I think sadly we are not going to get that any time soon. It will take decades rather than years.” One reason why The FA developed the new league women's super league under key supporter of the Women's game and former chief executive Ian Watmore was to compete with the USA in an attempt to get the best players playing in England. Chadwick believes that it is a completely different situation in the USA because the men’s game has nowhere near the chequered history that it does in England.

He says: “If you look at the development of women’s football in the USA it’s got completely different social cultural foundations. In Britain men play and women watch.“Although that’s changed, that’s what it’s been historically. On Shrove Tuesday men always played and women watched. The gender DNA of football is based on that. We are trying to engage in genetic modification to change football from a men’s game to a family game but the cultural heritage is already set. In the USA they didn’t have that and that’s why women’s football in places like china Norway and the USA is taking off. Women in this country have had a subsidiary role in the last 150 years.”

According to FA statistics, 1.1 million girls currently play football in England and Chadwick foresees a positive future for the women’s game and believes it could attract a good television deal and sponsors. However, he thinks it will never run alongside the men’s Premier League Chadwick said: “I think what it will be is that it will become well established, but it won’t be a mass market it will be a very sturdy niche market. If you look at Moto GP and Nascar it’s incredibly strong commercially, but it's not strong in this country, it’s a niche sport. It’s not the NFL, it’s not the NBA - it appeals to a particular set of people. “I think women’s football could become strong and vibrant and there could be some nice sponsors involved with good TV deals. The national team may prosper and win something like the World Cup, but I don’t think the New Women's Super League will become a mass market like the Premier League has become” - Britain’s Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe believes the Super League will be a accelerator for more female involvement in football. He commented: “It’s fantastic that the Women’s Super League is a step closer getting off the ground. Women’s football is one of the fastest growing sports in the country but there is still room for further growth. The Super League will shine the spotlight even brighter on the women’s game, encourage younger women to take up the sport and help develop stars that will represent the ever-improving women’s national team.

Shoo's That Girl Leading The Lads

Top Premier League footballer Heather Scheuber has taken on the unique challenge of leading a Men's Football Team Boughton Athletic to glory. Heather Scheuber is better known within the Women's game as the captain of Midlands Top Flight Premier Division side Birmingham City Ladies. However, the England youth international is also the manager of Boughton and, having helped the club survive the drop out of the men’s Chester & District League Division Two, she is determined to win promotion this season. The 21-year-old Women's Soccer Star from Waverton took over the managerial reins Boughton last year. She is only the female football manager in the male dominated league and is thoroughly enjoying the challenge and the responsibility that comes with the Managers' job. “I think it’s interesting because most of the team is older than me, but they listen to me and respect me because I play at a higher standard than them,” said Scheuber. “I train with them and take some of the tactics and drills I pick up at Birmingham and use them to improve Boughton. “My lads listen to me and know when I tell them something it is worth putting on the pitch.I get a bit of banter from the other teams, and they wonder whether I know what I am talking about, but they soon find out.”

The former Christleton High School pupil has used her football contacts within the game to good effect to arrange a pre-season clashes between Boughton and Birmingham Ladies, who finished fifth in the FA Women’s Premier League during the 2008/2009. It is the second time the two teams will have met. “It was funny,” said Scheuber. “The lads took it really seriously but the girls treated it as a friendly. It was a great match.” Boughton’s training timetable fits around Scheuber’s sessions with Birmingham City Ladies and her weekly work commitments as a data administrator in Christleton.

Scheuber manages Boughton on Saturdays before travelling to play for Birmingham City Ladies on Sundays. However, Scheuber no longer plays for England following a fall out with national team chiefs two years ago when they quizzed her commitment. “Women’s football has changed after the FA cut back our funding and some of the best players went to the professional league in the US,” said Scheuber.“I have responsibilities at Birmingham and at Boughton and, with the money for international players so poor now, it is not worth the hassle of finding time for yet another important commitment.“If more funding became available to make life easier I would consider it, as I feel I am missing out on a chunk of my career as a footballer. However, now I have plenty to occupy myself with.”

However, Heather has endured a difficult season both on and off the park, injured playing for Birmingham City Ladies earlier this season in the Clubs narrow defeat at the hands of Doncaster Rovers Belles a serious Knee injury has side-lined Scheuber for much of the season but having undergone a recent ACL operation to repair damaged anterior cruciate ligaments in her knee, she will be keen on get her boots back on once more for the start of the 2010/2011 but sadly for Heather both Birmingham City Ladies and Boughton Athletic are near the wrong end of their respective league tables the season draws to a conclusion.

LEICESTER CITY WOMENS FC APPOINT NEW FIRST-TEAM COACH

Leicester City Women FC is pleased to announce that they have appointed 21-year old Zoe Johnson as their new first team coach.

Manager Luke Turner says, " I'm really pleased I have been able to persuade Zoe to come and join our coaching staff from Preston North End. She is only young, but has good experience in this division, both managing a reserve side and being a first-team assistant manager. She will bring some knowledge with her that can improve our match preparation and bring some new ideas. She loves her football and is very eager to progress her coaching. I've been looking to bring in more staff for a while, but I didn't want to just bring anyone. Zoe fits the bill, I like what she has to say, and I'm sure we will work well together."

Zoe says, " I am really pleased to be given the role at a big club like Leicester in the Northern Premier League at my age and when the opportunity came up I grabbed the chance. I am looking forward to working alongside Luke, the coaching staff and all the players. I can't wait for the challenge and to progress myself in the game. Everyone at the club has made me feel very welcome, which is great, and I'm sure I will settle in quickly."

DOUBLE WINNING DEBUT SEASON FOR PEAGUS RESERVES

Pegasus Ladies Reserves secured their second piece of silverware inside seven days when they beat Droitwich Ladies at Malvern Town FC on Sunday in the Hereford and Worcester League Cup final as goals Lucy Belcher, Rhiannon Jones and Emily Lewis sealed cup success. The team comprising mainly of teenagers have enjoyed a fantastic primary season in senior football and provided an excellent pathway for players to move into the ladies' senior team. The Final on Sunday kicked off in glorious sunshine in front of a crowd of over 150 supporters.

Pegasus were first on the attack and in several early raids Nichola Wheadon was only just off target with terrific shots. She got even closer next when her cross hit the inside of the post and was scrambled clear. The pressure finally told midway through the first-half when Lucy Belcher hit a speculative shot into the roof of the net from 20 yards out. Pegasus continued to dominate the game and shots from captain Becky Gummery were cleared off the line after the Droitwich keeper made two great saves. However, the continued pressure told when young Rhiannon Jones, who joined the club this season from Welsh club Mardy Tigers, raced through the heart of the Droitwich defence to fire an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner of the net as Pegasus Reserves doubled their lead. Little was seen of the Droitwich strike force but when they did break away they were competently dealt with by Sophie Probert, Ellie Bishop, Chloe Volpe, Lauren Gough and Ashleigh Nicholls leaving keeper Kate Brisland a mere spectator for large parts of the half. On the stroke of half time a fine move saw Sarah Bishop burst clear, but her shot rattled the outside of the post.

In the second half, Droitwich tried hard to get back into the game, and Brisland was forced to race off her goal-line to clear the danger. However, it was always Pegasus, who looked the more likely of the two teams to score, and a Julie Nicholas ball through ball found Emily Lewis, and the sides youngest member beat off two challenges before firing her shot into the bottom corner of the net. In the middle of the park Tilly Salmon, with boundless energy, and Heather Troth caused constant problems, and Courtney Bowkett lead the attack. Despite the hot conditions, the use of roll-on/off substitutions was a great benefit and enabled a high tempo game to be played. A fine example of ladies' football played in front of an appreciative crowd.

DAVENTRY TOWN ENJOYS FANTASTIC SEASON AS THEY CLINCH PROMOTION INTO THE MIDLANDS COMBINATION.

Daventry Town Ladies gained their second promotion in successive seasons to advance from the East Midlands League to the Midland Combination. Under the management of Ben Jones, assistants Luke Aubrey and Andrew Humphries, they lost just 2 games in 16, winning 13, drawing 1, scoring 53 goals and conceding 32. Kerry Luckett was again top scorer with 35+ goals in all competitions winning the Golden boot for the 3rd successive season. Captain Erika Mole lead from the back and just missed out on the league player of the season by one vote. However, Keeper Sally Simpkin along with Mole and the rest of the Daventry defence picked up the Goalkeeping award for the 2nd successive season.

The season started better than expected, with solid performances to narrowly win the first two league matches and sit second in the table with confidence high. However, September and October proved to be a tough couple of months, Although they progressed in the county cup, they were knocked out of the FA cup and only picked up 4/12 points in the league. Life in the Premier Division was hitting home, and spirits were beginning to dampen. Entering into November and with the next league match approaching, Ben Jones and the rest of the management team decided to take the team back to basics, restore the “fun” and to rebuild confidence a game at a time. Starting with a visit to fellow league newbies Rise Park, who had made a flying start to the season. Travelling with only 11 players many of whom were not 100% the Daventry dug in and pulled off one of the performances of the season eventually running out 3-2 victors. The result was the catalyst for the season and from that match, Daventry took the league by the scruff of the neck going unbeaten from November to March; taking a maximum 15/15 points and setting up a top of the table clash with Mansfield Town.

Mansfield visited Communications Park looking untouchable at the top of the league having not dropped a point, and Daventry knew they would have to again put in a solid performance to get anything from the match. Mansfield started the stronger team and had chances to take the lead, but for a towering display by the Daventry, back line. New signing Laura Shaw stepped into the defence with ease and alongside Erika Mole, Laura Coulson and Emily Taylor; Mansfield were shut out and went into the break at 0-0. Daventry took heart from the first-half performance and started to believe, and within 10mins of the restart Nicole Evans had broken loose on the wing and after a mazy run fired low into the back of the Mansfield net. A second soon followed Lauren Roberts fired home after some great passing play with Kerry Luckett. Nerves again took over and Daventry soon found themselves pegged back at 2-2 with Mansfield growing stronger. Jess Holley released Luckett, who ran down the left flank and cut in at the by line to offer a pin-point pass to Evans to fire home. With time running out Mansfield pressed hard and broke down the right; the ball was played across the face of the box and into the path of the Mansfield striker who only had to tap the ball home from 3 yards. However, from nowhere Laura Coulson made up the ground to produce a fantastic last ditch tackle sliding in order to steal the ball off the strikers' boot and put it safely wide effectively sealing the match for the ladies. Daventry surged on with their impressive form and at the start of April, they had stretched their 100% unbeaten run to 11 matches giving the ladies a very real shot at the title with 3 games to play! Nevertheless, before they could continue in the league, there was a small matter of a cup final to attend to. For the first time in their history, Daventry Ladies had made the Northamptonshire County Cup Final and faced a Peterborough Sports Team who had earlier in the season knocked the Daventry out of the FA Cup. The cup run had proven to be a welcome distraction from the league exploits, and Daventry were determined to enjoy every second of the day.

The game was very topsey turvey with both sides looking to hit early. Daventry took the lead in the first half with an Erika Mole 30 yard free-kick finding the top corner. Daventry held firm but on the stroke of half time a Peterborough free-kick was converted at the far post, and the sides went in level at 1-1. The second half started much the same as the first with both sides going close. However, it was Peterborough that took the lead. Daventry pushed hard and went close on a number of occasions, Claudia Trotman, Kerry Luckett and Kelly Worthington all had chances. Daventry finally found the equaliser after some nice play down the wing from Charlotte Copeland led to a great cross followed by a well taken first-time strike by Kerry Luckett. In the dying minutes, Lauren Roberts found herself in space but her shot was superbly saved by the Peterborough keeper taking the game into extra time. 30 minutes of hard graft followed but neither team could find a winning goal, and the final was to be decided on penalties. Daventry elected to go first and Worthington calmly fired home her penalty. Sally Simpkin produced a fine save with her legs to shut out Peterborough’s 1st and give Daventry the edge. Jen Johnston and Loren Graham both steeped up and converted their penalties with ease. With the tie poised at 3-1, Simpkin again produced a superb diving save to deny Peterborough the goal. Knowing that one more would do it, Lauren Roberts placed the ball on the spot and rifled it past the keeper into the net to spark the celebrations. With the Cup firmly in the bag, it was back to the league. Starting with a hard fought 3 points at third placed Sandicace. Daventry clawed out a 2-1 victory after being a goal down for the majority of the match to set up a winner takes all title deciding match against Mansfield the following week. Mansfield had been top of the table for the entire season and were firm favourites to take the title on their home turf.

As he had done all season, Manager Ben Jones did his homework on the opposition, prepared the ladies hard and drilled in Mansfield’s strengths and weaknesses. This proved to be the masterstroke as although Daventry went a goal down early they took on board everything that they were told and grew as the game went on. With the defence again holding strong, Sarah Muttitt and Jess Holley took control of the midfield and were soon bossing the match. The equaliser came from a Mansfield attack down the left, after being caught up the field left back Laura Shaw tracked backward superbly to win the ball and produce a stunning pass into the feet of Kerry Luckett, who wasted no time in curling the ball into the top corner claiming her 19th goal of the season. From that point on Daventry never looked back and soon after it was 2-1. The second half was one-way traffic Luckett was soon celebrating her hat-trick after calmly lobbing the onrushing keeper after some fine play with strike partner Claudia Trotman. Kelly Worthington made it 4-1 converting from the spot. Mansfield thought they had grabbed a lifeline but from the restart, Sarah Muttitt broke through from midfield to slot the ball home and to put the tie beyond any doubt at 5-2. The Final whistle sparked the celebrations, and Daventry Town ladies were crowned champions with one game to spare. The Ladies entertained Rise Park on the final day and rounded off the season with a 1-0. The challenge of playing in the Midlands Combination for the first time has really set Communications Park alight with tough local derbies against Northampton Town and Coventry Copsewood. Stoke City and Leicester City will also prove to be mouth-watering ties. Daventry will be aiming for a healthy league position and to retain the Northants County Cup. Daventry are looking for experienced regional and combination players to join our thriving and friendly club and will be holding trials at Communications Park on Tuesday 15th and Thursday 17th May starting at 7pm.
