NEVER MIX POLITICS & FOOTBALL A charity football match which descended into chaos between politicians and journalists was called off after tempers boiled over, it has emerged. The match was stopped after 55 minutes following a number of controversial challenges between the Scottish MSPs and the sports journalists they were facing in Glasgow. BBC Scotland broadcaster Chick Young was taken out of the game by what he called an "evil" tackle, after which the MSP John Park was sent off. The Scottish MSPs has been branded "disgraceful, foul-mouthed thugs" after a match against journalists had to be abandoned in Scotland, We wonder if there will there be a re-match? At least two of the politicians' side were dismissed and both sets of players squared up to each other before the heated ill-temper encounter affair was called off on safety grounds.The game was a Sunday morning charity challenge match played at Lesser Hampden, next door to Scotland's National Stadium at Hampdon Park.John Park, the MSP for Mid-Scotland and Fife, was shown the red card after a string of vicious tackles.Peter Martin, a broadcaster with Radio Clyde who played for the journalists, says he could not believe the politician's display."He was like something out of the film Hellraiser."I turned to one of their guys and said 'he must be a rugby player, 'cos he's booted me, he's almost broken my team-mate's leg, and we're just 10 minutes into the game.The guy replied 'I'm afraid not, he's actually one of our front-benchers.It was when a separate member of their side ran 45 yards to put the boot into another one of my team-mates that the referee announced he was stopping the game for our safety."MSP Ken Macintosh, one of the organisers of the politician's team, said: "Normally, it's our football that embarrasses us, not our behaviour on the pitch. However, in this case, it wasn't a terrific display."

TIME FOR LADIES LEAGUES TO INTRODUCE “TEAM OF THE MOUTH” AWARDS As the 2008/2009 Ladies Football Season kicks-Off we believe its now time that Ladies Leagues around the Midlands area started to introduce a “TEAM OF THE MONTH” accolade and give Ladies Football Clubs the chance to take home a nice little Trophy and perhaps even a small cash reward at the beginning of each month for their hard work. Some Clubs will win nothing this season with only one promotion place upgrades so its now time to honour the Ladies Clubs who performance best during each Month throughout the Football Season. END OF SEASON SHAKE-UP The four Combination leagues who operate at step three level within the Women's Football Pyramid will be re-vamped at the end of the season.The restructuring and reorganization of the Northern, Midlands South East and South West Combination levels is designed to save teams excessive travelling,
PLAYERS SAFETY Team Managers and Match Officials are reminded too the fact that Law 4 states: “A player must not use equipment or wear anything which is dangerous to himself or another player including any kind of jewellery.” All items of jewellery (necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, leather bands, rubber bands etc.) are strictly forbidden and must be removed. Using tape to cover jewellery is not acceptable. Under-shorts worn by players, are to be of the same main colour as the shorts. If undergarments (shirts or shorts) are worn, the colour must be the same main colour as the playing kit or shorts. If a long sleeved under garment is worn the sleeve colour must be the same colour as the sleeve of the short sleeved shirt. Please note that under garments and thermal shorts may contain clothing manufacturer’s marks but must not exceed an area of 20 square centimetres and must not be visible outside playing kit during the period of a match. Match Officials are also to incorporate a footwear inspection into the pre-match safety check of players’ equipment. This will take place on the pitch before kick off or in the tunnel immediately prior to the game. Boot manufacturers have recently been experimenting with designs and some give cause for concern. The use of blades on the sole of the boot is an example of one such major concern.The Football Association have offered the following guidelines: “When inspecting footwear officials are to be alert to the possibility of the edge of the blade developing rough areas on either the plastic or metal used in their construction. These burrs are very sharp and have been the cause of lacerations on opponents. If match officials are concerned over the condition they should refuse to sanction their use until they have been made safe. If evidence emerges during the game e.g. torn stockings, lacerations, you may wish to follow up the inspection with the player or players concerned during a stoppage.” Referees are to report any instance where the kick-off has been delayed, as a consequence of the footwear inspection. It is a Player's responsible to make sure, they are wearing nothing that endangers themselves to their opponents during a game.At all levels of football, it is imperative that Match Officials adhere to their responsibilities of carrying out safety checks before games not only to safeguard players but to safeguard themselves.

To view the Video of the FA's Respect The Ref Campaign visit http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/7543345.stm.
NO JEWELLERY AT ALL THIS SEASON GIRLS The FA have also announced a clamp down on any Jewellery being worn by Players - It has now been confirmed to league Management Committees, and communicated to all match officials, That there is to be a zero tolerance policy to the wearing of any kind of and all jewellery, including wedding rings. All players must remove all jewellery prior to the game commencing. Any player failing to do so will be excluded from the game. This applies from the start of this season 2008/09 and to all internal and external cup competitions. Referees are urged to check that No Players is wearing any Jewellery. This FA Directive clarifies and removes any confusion that may have arisen over this F.A. directive, and we trust that all member clubs will communicate this to their management teams and playing squads to prevent any issues prior to, or delays in, forthcoming matches. For any further clarification on these issues, clubs are advised to contact the Referee Development Officers at their respective County FA's.

HEREFORD PHOENIX ENJOY GOOD PRESEASON BUILD-UP West Midlands Premiership newcomers Hereford Phoenix Ladies started their preseason build-up programme back on the 19h of July when they defended there. Welsh Super Cup title during a week long tournament held at Aberystwyth University. The first two days were open age and the Hereford team faced stiff opposition against FA Premier league Northern club Newcastle United Ladies, Midland Combination side The New Saints and The Caeridigion county side from north Wales. It did not start well when for Phoenix who lost their first game to the Newcastle United Ladies 5-0 before they then redeemed themselves with a 1-1 draw against the other Newcastle team.
They then went on to beat Caeridigion and lost to TNS to qualify for the challenge cup final where they lost out to Newcastle. This was a very good showing for the Hereford side that only fielded five players from the senior ladies side due to unavailability and had to make up the rest of the squad with under 15 & under 16 players. The rest of the week was spent competing in the under 16 tournament' in which they managed to Finnish third out of six teams Phoenix Ladies 2 - 0 CYP Wales. Last Sunday Phoenix hosted a game at Bromyard Town's Delahay Meadow against a Welsh representative under 17's side containing many Welsh internationals. Phoenix who fielded an Under 19's team proved to be too strong for the younger Welsh representative girls and goals from Laura Davies & Charlotte Criddle helped Phoenix to a hard fought win against a very mobile and quick young team who were warming up for a home international tournament in Ireland against England, Scotland and Ireland. Phoenix will continue their preseason preparations with away friendlies against Leafield Athletic, The New Saints, and Coventry Copswood, all from the Midland Combination league before taking on West Midland Side Leamington Lions. They kick off the new season with a home FA cup tie against Birmingham County Second Division opponents Tipton Town Ladies on the 7th of September ahead of their West Midlands Premiership debut at home to Bourne United Ladies.

NICOLA FOSKETT NAMED THE WEST MIDLANDS PREMIER DIVISION PLAYER OF THE YEAR  Coventry Copsewood Ladies celebrated another fantastic year on the football pitch under team-chief Mick Conneely at the club's awards night recently. Nicola Foskett was named Coventry Copsewood Ladies Player of the year;
Foskett aged 24, hit 37 goals during the club's West Midlands Premier Division Championship winning season and was just piped at the final hurdle for both the club and League top goal-scorers accolade by team-mate Ria Baker in the teams final league outing of the season. As well as clinching the club's player of the year award Foskett was named West Midlands Regional Ladies League Premier Division Player of the Season. Club Top Goal-Scorer Ria Baker hit 45 goals including eight goals in the final game of the season against Walsall Ladies captured both the Club and Leagues Golden Boot Award, Baker who is now in her second spell at Copsewood Ladies having previously played at Aston Villa and Coventry City is among a number of Copsewood Ladies players who England scouts have been casting an eye over, As is newcomer Kate Stevens who capped her debut season at Copsewood Ladies by jointly picking up the most improved player of the season award, Youngster Kate who orginates from Oxfordshire along with two, possibly three other Copsewood Ladies Players is tipped for further success on an international stage.
Marsha Towey was named jointly named with Kate as the most improved player, Towey who is an original member of the club having put on the colours of Marconi back in 2000; ever improving Marsha has enjoyed another good season having taken up ladies football at a later age than many players do. Players player of the year Leanne McKenna is among the players England scouts have been tracking, McKenna football family pedigree is well documented continues to shine after picking up a few tips she inherited from Granddad and former legendary seventies Sky Blues defender George Curtis, McKenna now in her third season bagged 15 goals and it’s no surprise Copsewood's rise and turning point seemingly excelled after McKenna's acquisition too the Club three seasons ago. Local girl Chantelle Stanley has enjoyed a great first season in Copsewood's back four and another player who has been instrumental for Copsewood Ladies this season is former England under 17 International Amanda Whalley who celebrates her 21st Birthday in the coming week, she continues to flourish and develop under the guidance of team-chief Conneely who has breathed new life to her game, with Whalley more than enjoying every minute of her time at Copsewood Ladies since her move from Coventry City. Bright prospect Natasha Smithers is expected to face competition next season if she wishes to hold on to the number one jersey with Conneely needing to bring in a specialist goalkeeper to extend his playing options despite utility Defender/Midfielder Rebecca Green deputising in a number of games and looking more than comfortable for much of the time in her newly acclaimed role. Kayleigh Brookes now in her sixth season hit seven goals but in the main compared too previous seasons Brookes had a below par season. Leona McCook netted ten goals and Sarah Brown chipped in with two goals. New recruit Jodie McGulkin who hit six goals in nine appearances towards the end of the season also helped pushed the team to its highest ever point in history. While squad members Claire Hume who has missed the entire league season through Injury and Melissa Danks who recently celebrated becoming a mum have been their to support their team-mates. Marie Cartwright's appearances were curtailed by injury after just three games following her move across the City.Natasha White another former Sky Blues Ladies player in the Copsewood ranks now in her fifth season at the Warwickshire club netted seven goals and continues to develop under the watchful eye of Mick Conneely.
On the night the ladies team presented Midlands Referee Pete Mulhall with a new stop watch, which apparently had a larger display of numbers that usual, (We rather suspect they are trying to tell Pete Something?) meantime Manager Mick received a lovely Photo Album to capture last seasons memories which the Ladies individually signed with their messages of Thanks while behind every great manager there has to be a great Woman and there was a special mention and presentation of a lovely bouquet of flowers for Marie Conneely who has assisted and supported the team. After back to back promotions from the West Midlands Southern League.
2008/2009 presents Coventry Copsewood Ladies with a new, exciting and dynamic challenge as they head for uncharted territory in the Midlands Combination where visitors to Allard Way will include the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Derby County and West Bromwich Albion alongside fellow city rivals Coventry City Ladies who finished as runners up last year having been edged out of the promotion picture by Leicester City Women. Conneely has singled handily mastermind Copsewood's rise with the aid of son's Ryan and Joe assisting with coaching roles. Conneely will bring in a fitness coach in preparation for the teams assault on the Midlands Combination when the girls report back for training in July, he is also expected to name a number of new signings ahead of Septembers Midlands Combination kick off, High on his shopping list is highly rated Solihull Ladies defender Emily Brimstone. The team will need to appoint a Physio before the new ladies Midlands Combination league campaign begins in earnest which they must have under league rules. Copsewood Ladies who have once again been kindly and generously Sponsored by Playwrights Bistro enjoyed a fantastic Women's FA Cup crusade which received FA Recognition after the club was voted the “Team of the Second Round” following a 3-1 win over The New Saints before their FA Cup escapade came to a holt in the final ten minutes against Crewe Alexander Ladies in round three, having put on a brave show against their more illustrious opponents that will rate as this season's biggest disappointment, Copsewood Ladies being narrowly edged out by the odd goal late on with extra-time beckoning. Twelve months ago boss Conneely said “He would be surprised if side dropped a point” and a year later his powerhouse squad turned that quest reality by remaining unbeaten in the West Midlands Premier division through-out the whole season and with Copsewood's frightening pace and ability to deliver goals from all quarters of the park they go into next seasons campaign full of confidence knowing that if they stay focused, they are more than capture of achieving bigger things and with several players already turning the heads of ladies football watchers in higher places and having guaranteed back to back promotions this season rate's as the best in the club's eight year history of a Copsewood Ladies side that were formed by a few work-mates, and as Conneely leads his side into their eight league season after originally only taking the managers job far a few weeks, he is still loving every second of the Job alongside his other sporting passion Coventry Greyhound Racing and while Conneely will be judged on results there can be no greater or bigger achievement for any manager or any football Club than seeing there players capped for England, and that goal could be just around the corner as Conneely predicts.

Having not lost a game since January 6th, the Ladies senior team just grew stronger and stronger as the second half of the season grew older. Two new mid-season signings paved the way for success and with it proved to be the final pieces of the jigsaw which helped to drive the rest of the team onwards and upwards in last seasons successful league County League campaign.Heather Ladies team coach Mark Jones said " It was going to be a hard task to win the County league, but the Heather team management were very confident in the ability of all of the players and the confidence in the team was at an all time high. We carved out result after result and only dropped just Two points against Loughborough University, whilst table toppers Harborough Town were dropping points almost every week.The final game of the season saw us playing Harborough Town (who were now Cup Winners as well) at Heather" Harborough Town Ladies only needed a draw to secure the League title, whereas Heather had to clinch victory to steal the Championship Title Race from under the noses of their Leicestershire opponents, Jody Scott (one of the club's new signings) scored the opening goal after 15 minutes and Heather Ladies had their tails up, a poor clearance by the Harborough Goalkeeper saw Lou Parry scored the second goal from almost 40 yards out. Heather dominated for the rest of the game and despite Harborough scoring a late penalty,The final whistle blow and amid the celebrations Heather Ladies became the Leicestershire FA County League Champions and with it sealed promotion to the East Midlands Women’s Regional Southern League.

Claire told us "I was selected for England Deaf Women's World Cup Squad in May 2008, and couldn't believe it, but was very happy that I had made my dream come true. We flew out to Greece on 30th June and arrived late evening. This gave us a few days to acclimatise with our first match being on the 2nd July. Strict rules meant we weren't allowed out in the sun except for matches. The squad to play the first game was announced on 1st July. I was named in the starting line-up to play left midfield and was very happy but extremely nervous. After tactical sessions throughout the day, I felt prepared and raring to go. The following day we faced a short journey to Thiella Stadium, Patras.
The game kicked off and within 4 minutes I had scored the first goal from outside the box. I was gob-smacked when I scored, and all of a sudden the whole team were congratulating me. It was a fantastic feeling knowing I had scored the 1st goal for England's Deaf Women's 11-a-side team, but this wasn't the end. I completed my hat-trick in the first half and went on to score my 4th goal in the second half. The final score was 10-1. Unfortunately, due to an ankle injury received Three weeks before I flew out to Greece, I had to have my ankle strapped before every match and physio everyday”
